what engine he has under the hood? supercharged m20?

btw, does m20b20 (motronic) from e30 has larger valves compared to m20b23 from e21? can anyone confirmed? can the head bolt directly?

Hi

Firstly welcome to the e21 club

before you upgrade the engine sort the suspension/brakes, at least new uprated springs/dampers and replace all of the bushes. then sort the brakes 323i trailing arms at the with e30 rear calipers, and depending on your budget volvo 4 pots or wilwood at the front, plus put the battery in the boot to give you room for the induction setup

Then sort the engine I assume you intend to use stand alone fuel injection as the k-jet will run out of steam at 200hp so ditch the 2.3 but a 2.5 as the 885 head casting is far better, getting running then use the search fuction here for turbo/supercharger info.

If you want to use k-jet, it will work okay as it was good enough for the f40, you can alter the fuel pressure and mixture simply to deal with the extra airflow but still swap for a 2.5 as it will be the cheapest 30hp you can get

thanks for the pointers e21Jason

currently my car is in standard condition but the suspension is newly replaced. next up will be the bushing, my steering vibrate quite a lot when braking (not the car, only the steering), which bushing is the problem?

iam thinking of upgrading to the volvo calipers next, i have read somewhere that the stock disc is to small for the calipers, what disc can i upgrade to? mayb i can re-drill the disc from e30 325i to fit the car PCD. what is your suggestion?

back to engine question, if i installed the supercharger, use low boost (5-6psi), and route the air to the following order
air filter - AFM - throttle body - supercharger - intercooler - intake manifold
will it work?

Hi

I have a pair of e21's as well, both 316's, one road and one track car that I am rebuilding. Jasons advice re suspension/brakes is worth listening to.

Rewind to the Croft trackday last october...

He has a 2.7L M20 with triple webers etc, I have a 1.8 with a downdraught weber.

I had a choice of 13" soft slicks or 15" goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's, Jason had supermarket plastic tyres.

I had entirely new suspension/running gear and 323i spec brakes with ferodo pads, goodridge hoses. I think Jason has those wilwoods etc, not sure how new his subframe bushes etc are.

Who was faster - logically big power won, not really. I chased a 130i sport until it took refuge in the pits, then did the same to the merc CLS 65AMG that could go in straight lines very well but didn't like corners until he bailed as well. Kept up with Jason apart from the straights where he pulled away. One of the e21's spun and it wasn't mine (or Nicks that is also now mine).

Before I did the suspension etc on my car, it was OK to drive on the road, but changing all the 24 year old rubber bushes made a massive difference. As to the brakes - we discovered my brake light switch was bust at Croft, but after we fixed it other people still thought I had a problem, it was just that I was braking later than they thought possible. Even with a heavy 6 cyl engine it's a light car, and the 323i spec brakes are fine with decent pads/hoses/fluid.

Engine wise - I am doing a 2L M10 with megasquirt and S14 M3 throttle bodies, next thought is to stick a turbo on it as well. I am sure that someone like Ant will be able to give you advice on boost levels etc, but I agree with Jason - serious suspension and brake improvements first.

Jim
