Been out for 20 miles or so.
At first she wouldn't idle, everytime I came to a standstill she stalled dead. After 5 mins of driving about this has stopped and the idle speed is steady at 850rpm ish.
Obviously it needs running in so up to 60% throttle and 4krpm max for a while.
She does feels very lively, in comparison to the 2.7 this one feels light and airy but you can feel that she's going to be a screamer.
I went down the M60 a couple of junctions and back mixed with some country roads and was still way quicker than most stuff off the lights with a light throttle
The clutch is taking some getting used to, there is much less 'give' in the way it takes up the drive. With a normal clutch there's a fair bit of lee-way in the biting point, you don't have to get it spot-on everytime. This one isn't snatchy but there's about 20% of the standard clutches 'give', easy to stall if you don't get it quite right.
Looks good on the econometer as well, 35mpg at 80mph in top with just a smidgen of throttle.
A couple of fitted pics

Vids to follow !
Cheers,
Iain T

It sounds different to the 2.7, this one has regained that offbeat gargle that the 2.7 lost when I fitted the 6 branch.

Well done
Good feeling when it starts the first time. Interesting yours did the same as mine for the first few miles stalling at junctions.
I'll have to get some videos of mine up when the weather improves again.

Good work,Iain, you are braver than me....I kept my new build to 2000rpm for the first 250 miles!! Your initital idle problem could have been the ECU learning the new chip?

Reggid, the torque seems to start rising at about 3k, she's really begging to pull past the 4k limit, so frustrating
Malcolm, I agree, must have been learning the map, it's fine now.
Going for another run shortly, over to Huddersfield to look at another car for the wife.
Checked all the fluids again, the oil seemed low until I realised I hadn't knocked the dipstick tube fully home
Also re-checked the front crank bolt, the clutch claims to cope with 340lbft and it can certainly hold the torque required for this bolt.
Thumb is still smarting, lost a fairly deep chunk of skin
Cheers,
Iain T

Sweetness. Time to enjoy the fruit of your labour - you've still got enough thumb for some artistic roundabout exits
Player6 - just saw your car today as I was coming off Newmarket road via Occupation road (on foot). Heard it first - sounds beyond fruity with all those pops and bangs on the trailing throttle. Sounds even better under load. The guy coming the other way inthe C-Class Merc nearly took out a parked car because he was too busy eyeballing your motor in the mirror

It's 9.74:1, using the 8.8:1 325i pistons.
I've skimmed 0.5mm off the block to get the piston to head clearance correct.
Cheers,

it has indeed been sold or more precisely swapped for the KTM duke in his sig pic. he took me out for a run in it before it went and it was pretty impressive stuff even from the passenger seat. ive got the twin of this engine (slightly lower spec cam asside) on my engine stand at work just waiting for a few finishing details before its installed. hope it turns out to be a good way to blow 2 bags

2 bags bargain! this must be all for parts as there is no labour when your building it yourself. The engine parts depending on spec can swallow some serious dollar.
Can't wait to rebuild my 2.7 engine
Will probably end up costing the same as the bodywork lol

hmm let me see
crank
rehone and deck block
balance crank, rods, pistons, flywheel (temple special edition flywheel)
new rings
pressure test and skim head
new valve guides and two angle valve seats
cat cam
2.8 chip
new mains and big ends
new bolts for mains and big ends
full set of gaskets
head bolts
water pump
oil pump
timing belt and tensioning gear
rocker shafts
rockers
eccentrics
oil spray bar
clutch
think thats about it. hell of a lot of original parts there too, wouldnt ever consider using euro or gsf tat especially for oil pumps etc

which cat cam? how come you went for 2 angle valve grind? i thought OE was 3
whats iain special flywheel?! i've got one on my 2.5 made a hell of a difference in the lower gears and economy. 30mpg on the way at 85 on the cruise yeasterday
OE clutch?
The bottom end balance is a nice touch

cam is the alpina spec one 264/264? didnt want a lumpy idle especially considering the lightened flywheel, cant remember how much meat iain takes off them at the mo but its considerably lighter. also went with iains opinion on the valve seats as it seemed to work on his engine and a few people reckon 3 angle isnt necessary on engines which arent high revving. im not qualified to commen on this so please dont ask me to elaborate.Simon13 wrote:which cat cam? how come you went for 2 angle valve grind? i thought OE was 3

whilst ive got your attention si, i seem to recall you having a conversation with pacerpete regarding valve settings when using spikier cams, couldnt share the knowledge could you?
as for the M3 lump Matt, it was one of those occasions when if something sounds too good to be true then it generally is. still want to do the conversion but it wont be with this car as i like it looking (mostly) standard. got something else in mind for that one.

Did you get the engine ballance and the other work done in sheff? i need the most of the above machining work doing on a m42 bottom end i'am building up
