Ordered some Black dye to do my carpet and a few other bits.
Was planning on using a sponge to do some of it but do I need a soft sponge or hard sponge? :o:
Id imagine it`d be the hard otherwise the soft sponge would drink all the dye but never done this before so no harm asking :D

The best way to put it on the carpet is to get a hand spray bottle (from a kitchen spray) and fill it with the dye, take all the interior, including the centre console, out and cover all that's left(wiring gear lever etc. ) with plastic bags and spray the carpet , while you are doing this have a nylon scrubbing brush and brush the wet carpet so as to let the dye soak in and cover evenly...

It will cover the plastic heel rest ..but unevenly ..it's trial and error...the main thing is do it on a dry day with all the windows open and try to leave it for as long as possible after you have finished ..not because it doesn't dry ..the fumes will knock you out.....and use heavy duty rubber gloves as well ....be warned

Looks good when finished though

Can I ask that you put pics up of your finish, and advise on durability.

Someone asked a question on the other thread about the dye coming off onto white trainers, can anyone shed some light on that?

If its the valeterspride dye..the durability is great ,it does not come off, but it makes the carpet a bit harder and my light grey carpet is not really jet black but more of a very very dark charcoal grey...this is after 1 year...really very pleased with it :D

and it doesn't take long once you start spraying but don't expect to want to drive the car for quite a bit after you've finished (FUMES)

how much do you reckon you would need to do rear shelf, headliner and carpets, and what would be the best way to dye the back seats or is it easier to get black ones

you need 1.5 litres to do the carpet properly ...i got away with 1 JUST! so about 2 1/2 for the lot..... if you are just doing a re dye of the seats either gliptone or furnitureclinic ... do a search

Well finally got to have a go with the dye.Thought id start on my parcel shelf first.
Ended up using about half a litre on the thing so think im being a bit hasty with it.
Anyway it has come out ok.I did the actual blind too but im not happy with the finish on that(bit shiny/patchy) so will probably try and wipe it off and just spray it Satin Black.
Next job is start taking out the windows etc to do the roof lining winkeye

wouldn't it be easier masking the windows and everything else instead of taking the windows out?

1/2 a litre!!! I managed with 1 for the whole carpet..are you brushing as you spray to get an even covering..also i would wipe the headlining over with something to take any possible grease off it...you wont run into problems of uneven coverage :)

Dave ill be honest...I did try brushing it in but I bthink the brush I used was to hard so just sprayed loads on till it was even :o:
Ive learnt though and today started doing my carpet, this time using an old soft nail brush.
The results?Well lets just say im chuffed to bits :P After stripping out the seat/lower trim etc which took about an hour, gave it a good hoover out and made a start.Covered really well and using the soft brush made it so much easier.
Felt dry well within an hour but left it with the windows open an inch to air/dry overnight.
Ill take some pics and post up tomorrow.

Not the best as they are either too bright or too dark.
The heel mat and pad at the side of the accelerator pedal was done with Satin Black paint with some sort of etch primer OBs had.

Really nice job Tony - are you leaving the seats the same colour? I've toyed with the idea of doing something similar to mine, but I think I'll stick with the dark grey and anthracite ... unless my boat comes in and enables me to afford a total leather re-trim with co-ordinated wilton carpets.
