dont spose anybody knows the weight or a 2.8 m52 and an s50 just trying to weigh the pros a cons of each of the conversion (excuse the pun) s50 is more powerfull but m52 is lighter etc this will make the final decision on what conversion i am going to do. if the m52 is a fair bit lighter then thats what im going to go with as its going in a rally car.

cheers

M52 will be much much lighter than the S50.

Give me 2 mins and I'll find the exact weights.

I would really like either ,

But i think if , or when i do do it i may have to go for the m52.

I think to do a s50 may be more expensive , i understand with a little tunning 200 can be had from a m52, enough for you ?

depends what you want what your budget is i supose though try that e30 24v website a great website , with very knoladgable people on it .

cheers maxfield, well id be hoping for about 250 with some highish lift cams ported head and ITB's 325's actually handle well its just 318is are even better so by dropping and s52 in im not actually making the engine any heavier so will keep the good handling. where as with an s52 you dumping another 30kgs in the front, not good for a rally car. 250 should be more than enough power i think 320 would be undriveable in the wet. a standard m52 conversion should be a fair bit cheap than an s50 but been as im wanting ITB's it will probably come to more than wat an s50 would cost but imo its worth it, just need to start sourcing bits now.

6 cylinder engines sit quite far over the front axle especially M30's so there will be a slight difference to the handling. S14 M42's sit alot further back with no over hang on the front axle. S50's are heavy Iron block jobs! they weigh about 20kgs less than the 5.4 V12 lumps! iirc

S52 cams as in US spec M3? they are £900 bmw only

I remember that S50 weights 232 kg, just 8 kg less than S62 engine (240 kg) and 18 kg less than M70B50 (250 kg). M50B25 weights 198 kg and alu block M50B28 - 170 kg (5 kg less than M20B25).

S50 is that heavy.. What on earth class are you going to rally in with these engines in a Sport?!

M52 weighs alot less than an S50 and less than an M20 when fully dressed

I don't know where he took these weights but they are wrong. For 100%. BMW officially publicised 240 kg as a weight of S62 and 250 kg for M70. Also the second untruth is that S70/2 engine was originally developed for M8. It is not true. S70/1 from M8 was based on S70 engine and with the exception of cylinders spacing have nothing in common with S70/2 S70/3 McLaren F1 engines (but on these engines was based P74 and P75 engines from BMW LMR).

EDIT: These weights are short engines weights. I checked it with ETK. Even not close to real engine weight.

if you read his reply it points out the fact that the weights on that link are short engine weights, not fully dressed, hence the difference
