Hi all, I'm new! surprisingly.
Found the forum last night while trying to do a dabble of research on buying guides but didnt get too far. I've searched the site but not to much avail.

I'm looking at a 1989 316i lux on wednesday now, I have been told to look out for rust on :- around screens, rear arches, underside and front bulk head. also I have been told to check for mayo on oil filler cap and for a steady temp guage.

Is there anything else I should look out for so I dont end up with a dog?

Here's a pic of the car. I know the current owner well and trust him pretty well but I'm taking a mate aswell who's a little more clued up than me but I dont know how clued up so thought I would just check with the "enthusiasts"

what does this mean? (I know what they are) but what is it hinting at? I know it's just had a new head put on with new gaskits etc as I helped do it

Tappet noise on 316/318i is caused by the camshalt being worn and the hydraulic tappets (basically levers that open the valves) being worn.

it exhibits itself as a "tickka tickka tickka" noise, and is readily apparent.

doesnt mean the car is scrap-just needs a few pennies spent on it  :D

All m40's are scrap really!...Most seam to start making the tapping noise when they go over 100 000 miles.

M40's are pretty much useless if you ever want to tune them, end up spending Ԛ£1000's to make a bouple of BHP. Earlier m10's are far easier to tune. It is however pretty easy to put a m42 engine from the 318is in it., but if you can affored one now you might as well! Far better car.

As long as its rust free though you have a good base.
