I have been researching into getting some solid steering guibo's made up after this happened to Theo's guibo at bedford not so long back:

Image

Most rubber discs are approaching the 20 year old mark and are the cause of sloppy steering and some serious 'play' in the steering wheel as me and theo found out rather scarily down the a1m.

Now i already have one on my car and am looking to make an exact
replica of the ones pictured below (except the colour). Despite what some may say, i have felt absolutely no change to the comfort or noise/vibration of the car once this mine was fitted; the steering simply had more feel to it and the wheels actually turned left and right even at the slightest turn of the wheel.

This is what they look like:

Image

and when fitted:

Image

The disc is 20mm thick and is a direct replacement for the rubber coupling. As its metal (most likely stainless steel of some sort as it needs to be fairly heat & rust resistant), it needs no heatshield and so this aids clearance for all your m30/m50 guys who are struggling to put shorter racks on your cars.

I am still in the process of getting a quote about getting a batch made. I truly have no idea about cost yet although i am obviously hoping some sort of group discount will be available. As a ROUGH guidance, i am hoping they will be in the £30 region, but certainly shouldn't be any more than £45-50 as this would simply be outrageous and not very cost effective. I would hope to sell around ten sets but obvsiously before i go any further i need to make sure there is interest. So put your name down here even if you MAY be interested and i can proceed from here with what is necessary; if i only have three of four people interested then i will only get that many made (probably).

There will be a prototype run on Theos track slag to ensure fitment, quality and tolerance before i get the rest of the batch made up.

Also just to mention, the original guibo is riveted from the factory. The new guibo is instead bolted in place, but special nuts and bolts are needed from BMW (as seen in the first pic above) which are shouldered and the perfect length. Last time i bought mine they were about £6 delivered, so hardly breaking the bank but worth bearing in mind, as you will need them.

I will upload a CAD drawing of the guibo once the final sizes have been determined. At the moment, sizes are not final; they depend on the trial fitting on Theo's car.

Any questions, feel free!

Regards, dan

will these result in a lot more vibration through the steering wheel? or is the difference negligible

Dan, do you have a rough idea of your timescale with these?

Thanks a lot,

I am looking to get them done ASAP. Bank holiday weekend doesnt help, i have sent the drawing of to be checked for quality and if all is good, there may be and up and running prototype, asusming the spec and size is good, on theo's car towards the later end of next week!

Regarding timescale to producation, no ideas as i havent even found a surefire place to make them yet. I would be looking to get the majority of it sorted out before i get back to uni on teh 7th of April.

Ant, those are the people I am going to talk to - they did an exhaust flange for me last year and the service was excellent and at a fair price too.

When you install these, it's worth replacing the pinch bolts (or at the very least the deformed nuts) on the UJs too.

I didn't and one of mine rattled itself loose which could've been nasty!

Definately a worthwhile mod and as Dan says it doesn't cause any discomfort through the steering wheel.

I can confirm it. I have a home made version in my car and can't notice any increase of noise or vibrations. And the steering feel is very good.

Is it from Muzzimotorsport? They are selling DTM copy and it is alloy made. Can you make it anodised alloy?

Muzzimotorsport is selling alloy ones for € 57.00, so if it will be too costly, we can make a group buy, I think.

Yan,

yes mine is from muzzi & i also thought it was annodized alloy. When i bought mine some time back, however, it was only ┚¬35 , not ┚¬57.

Muzzi is a good second idea, didnt think of that!

Dan,
I want to buy an alloy one, so if you are considering that option, you can count me as well.
