e36 rack fitted??
if so whats it feel like in daily use??
i love the way the e30 feels when theyre right but heard the e36 has a quicker lock and that sounds good for my conversion when i get round to it ;lol but snag is how does the rack feel in everyday use?? dnt wanna lose the feeling an e30 gives plus am planning on a 3/or 3.5 litre conversion so will have to cope with that in the future cheers Daz

I think you cant use the E36 rack with the M30 engine as the exhaust manifold would get in the way,i think you would have to have a six branch manifold made to fit ?

The pinion on an E36 rack comes out at a more acute angle (i.e. a few degrees more parallel to the rack), than that of an E30 rack.
This has the effect of moving the lower steering shaft outwards, and into the way of the manifolds for most conversions.

Oh,i was told that it moves the shaft closer to the engine ?

As you can see i can't have a rack that does that.

It doesn't actually catch any more as the manifold has been ground down but its still very tight.

Unless i've got the wrong end of the stick again

Sort of makes it closer and farther away. i.e the more acute angle makes it occupy more space generally.
Tried one on my M50 conversion, because before I put it on, it looked like it would help with clearance problems. After I had trial fitted it, I found it made things worse, so off it came again.
Didn't realise at the time that it had a quicker ratio, or I might have tried harder.

I have an E36 steering on my 323i, with the standard M20 engine. I also have a 6 branch.

Normal driving is where it is a lot better, going around roundabouts and things requires less turning. I'm not sure about the feel because I can't remember how it was before. I had power steering before the conversion too and apparantly the pulley has to be changed for a different size one with the E36 rack. This wasn't done on my car so now my steering is very light. That is the only problem I have with it, on wet or dirt roads it is hard to feel how much grip there is because the steering is too light (too much power assistance). I hope to get that fixed up soon.

Hard to get a better picture, sorry.
