Ffs, It's bad enough keeping the battle fought on the boat anchor side without having to send some of the brigade to argue with M40 owners now
didnt think anyone would take the bait

More to it than that! The engine internal parts are all different, and quite a few external parts are M42 specific too. Including the exhaust etcmarkus_74 wrote:Related with the thread. So, I can up grade my M40 become M42 with only change the cylinder head?
Does any one in the zone ever do that?
thanks

325i 6pot is best!markus_74 wrote:Which is better 6 pot 325i or 4 pot 318is??
I just change my tire with rightness size 205/55/15 (before is 185/65/14) I feel that it is under power but it is really smooth.
Haha, I was only really messing too to be honest. We all know the iS is the happy mediumtylerma wrote:was only a joke dudeDave_M3 wrote:![]()

This one is the one that will need the thread locked over, lol
So Could you bascaily make an M42 (Or something abit more specialWhich is better 6 pot 325i or 4 pot 318is??
If this is the case, it would be wicked handy as I have a M40b16 with a good block but crappy lifters and a M42 with a poor bottom end because of an oil pump problem
M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
Why would you want to use the M40 block with an M42 head?
Would you be able to convert the M40 block to run a timing chain?

You cannot make an M42 out of an M40 by just changing the Sump and head - it was a joke.
The M42 is superior in design to any other BMW engine, including current ones because it is a
unique and complex poewrtain. The reason 318iS; never rust is because they need all their strength
to contain the 1.8L 16V M42.
Also, you'll have to have your body and wheels and roof strengthened to deal with the extra torque.
Seriously.

I was just thinking of it in a moment of boredom...
I have a good block from an M40 and everything else from a M42 apart from a decent block.
Wouldn't be worth the hassle, but kept me thinking for a few moments, lol.
I agree with all the strenghtening needed
A little birdie told me the iS has a much stiffer shell than a measly M40 shell, has lots of reinforcing done to the front of it appartently.

The M42's torque was strangled by BMW so as not to get too close to the M3.

The M42, especially when mated to it's true home, the special and custom 318iS shell,
was deemed too rapid for mountainous and curve-laden road nations such as the UK and Europe.
It was only actually officially 'released' by one BMW dealer near Alice Springs, Australia, where the highway
that stretched in either direction from the dealers doors, was long and straight enough that new owners wouldn't kill
themselves - going some way to alleviating BMW's conscience on the beast they had unleashed.
The Aussies soon recognized a lucrative export market for this outrageous power and quickly
started shipping them to wealthy thrill-seekers all over the world. The slack ownership standards since
then have seen power and speed drop slightly to current levels.

If I'm not wrong the M40 Torque is 85 kW (114 hp) @ 5500 165 N·m (122 ft·lbf) @ 4250 and M42 engine is 103 kW (140 PS) @ 6000 175 N·m (129 ft·lbf) @ 4500 (red line 6300)
The different is only 7 ft-lbf, I think this is very small, but I still don't understand why some people choose M42 and not M20 B25 that has a lot of more power.
