After starting and putting into drive and setting off it cuts out and dies. It will restart but is very slow to respond. Once it has been running for a while it is ok, the problem only occurs after cold start.

I have noticed also that there is quite a strong smell of fuel when running could this be related.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a big engined Volvo and a V8 Rover do this,I was advised it was something to do with a cold start valve or something.
Trouble is,I donated the old Volvo to a museum before I fixed it and the Rovers gearbox blew up,also before I fixed it,so I can't say for certain if thats what the problem is,but it's a start for ya :D

Oh,and they were both auto's too, doing exactly what your 320 is doing.

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...

Can't remember the set up on the Series I ( I had a 323i for 16 years) but it sounds like a dodgy temp sensor telling the car its still cold and delivering extra fuel. Either that or the car is taking too long to warm up - so perhaps dodgy thermostat.

i have a similar problem but both of the above have been replaced in the last month, i find it worse in reverse though which is odd

Elliot, If those have been replaced and with your high ratio/high ratio problem in reverse I would now be looking at the fuel line. Hopefully a blocked filter but more like the pump beginning to fail. Is the pump noisy when stationary? - a problem pump usually develops a fairly high pitched whine. Last time I had one go, the car would cut out on left hand corners only!
I would also give all air hoses around the throttle body a good check over.
Hope the hunt is successful.
