agreen - glad I got you into the golf, I knew you would enjoy it. Quick bit of kit isn't it?
Err yes amazingly , i could not belive how planted it felt and how much grip it had , a very very very 8) car , the scary thing is he said after we pulled into the pits

"i was not pushing it to hard i am a little tired from driving all morning "

cheers Gary, and to your mate 8)

Yes Karan it was ......

It's taken him a long time and a couple of engines to realise that sticking with almost standard TT turbo power was the way forward. Although in a car weighing 900kg's it feels pretty quick.

It managed just over 130 verified mph down the back straight, which is pretty quick from 235bhp. He is also a pretty useful driver, but dont let him know I said that please :D :D

His only downside was that in one day he wore his pads through to the discs and ended up screwing his brand new stoptech calipers up at the same time.

I have a video of him following me that I will post later.

agreen wrote:paynts shame about your engine dude , did i hear you talking about a 2.7 though ???
No Ive spent alot of time thinking about it, a looking at the agro of finding an ETA engine or the corrct cranbk from something else
In the end I'm just going to rebuild what I've got for reliability
including a windage tray and sump mods plus a new cam
since I'm getting and honest 197 BHP already I reckon I might get a bit over 200 without going 2.7
theres a few 2.5 cars running in Kumho and other series pushing out over 200 at the wheels which shows what can be done winkeye

I'm pleased this has been dragged to the top again, as I hadn't seen the Bedford pictures. Nice to see a shot of my three cars together. I'd like one of those for my wall

OUCH!
Pride & pocket only hurt?
Where did you do this? Was it dry or wet?
Driver error, other vehicle or mechanical failure?
Any mechanical damage or 'just' panelwork?
Hard luck. I've read you're thread recently and you had done a really nice job. Looks like an expensive repair.
Feel for you Buddy.
Regards
Keith.

Gah! I've recently been reading through your build, as i'm doing something very similar to a touring at the moment with the aim of returning to the 'ring in it, and think that you're build is one of best benchmarks for thoroughess and quality on here. The photos above made my heart sink! What happened?! Is it repairable?

Hope you're OK and the only damage is to the car...

Castle Combe charity track day for NSPCC on Saturday.

Early morning, foggy, damp.

Camp corner. From what I remember I had made the bend and was feeding the power back on. Back stepped out, thought I had caught it, snapped back and from that point I was a passenger. I remember travelling backwards quickly and the next thing the inevitable BANG BANG came. I would suggest a 50-70mph impact. No excuses, goes down as driver error, pushing on too much too soon.

Took the car to 'greasy' who built the car for me yesterday. As well as the obvious the front chassis legs are bent and potentially something at the back too. The cage saved the car and possibly me from injury too. Without it the car would have been lost.

As it is it looks like the thread for this car may get interesting again

greasy's first look at the car.

Started having a proper look today. Forgot the camera - putting it in the car now, ready for tomorrow!!

Stripped off the bumpers and the plastic bits. The vultures started turning up today, let alone circling on here!! Couple of silly offers for the wreckage...

Phoned up the jig man and secured a low-cost high favourage borrow of the gear for next week.

Arranged a borrow of a 7.5 tonner with tail lift + driver too.

Phoned local friendly race repair shop and told them of Gary stackage. They agreed to pitch up for a look see.

When they turned up, the mocking started with a vengeance. Comments like "that's not a stack, its a slap, and not much of one at that" etc

They asked who had pushed Gary, but when I explained he managed it all on his own, the laughter really started...

Des has very kindly volunteered to come over (they are only over the road anyway) when the gear and Gary have arrived to split his time between straightening out the car and straightening out the driver...

The rear 1/4 will be repaired, hopefully, as no one really fancies unpicking a secondhand panel, and a new one is £300. A few extras required - one engine mount ripped in two - there is a scar on the chassis leg where the engine has moved a good 4 inches to hit it, and then moved all the way back. Radiator stuffed, fan shed 3 blades. Rack banana'd. Oil cooler beaten, but probably OK.

parts list for starters
F & R bumpers + infills
Front panel
Lower front panel
Headlamp assy O/S
O/S headlamp grille
O/S/F wing
O/S/R door
Radiator
Oil cooler (possibly)
Oil cooler pipes (possibly)
Rad fan and viscous hub (may have one in stock)
Bootlid
O/S/R lamp
Steering rack
Track rod ends
Front subframe
Engine mounts
Oil cooler grille
Brake vent ducts x4

Oh dear not good. Barry has a new 2dr OSR 1/4 :(

Bet you are glad you had such an extensive cage now. I think I really really need to get one for the 205.

A reshell would mean new cage though and sure Gary doesn't want to go through that again, I've seen much much worse repaired when a decent weld in cage has kept most of the shell straight

The other problem is that although these replacement shells are supposedly "rust free" they're not! When you have an accident and the spot welds pop you can see the corrosion within the box sections (look at how bad Simon 13's inner 3/4 was and he is doing a road resstoration). So, in real terms it is easier to repair than have to go to the whole exercise of preparing another shell. Like JimmyC says another cage, cos' you wont get the old one out!

On another note it's sad to hear that people are mocking the guy's misfortune and also like Gary says, the "vulture's are circling". No respect some people.
Gary admits it was driver error, he's paying a price already (forget the financial one). Still I suppose if they're having a pop they're leaving someone else alone. Bastards!
