Me? I haven't yet. Mostly because I haven't taken the time to do the idle control valve to give it more air when cold. Atm it takes me a few starts to get going then a minute or so at 2000rpm to get her warmed up enough to keep going. This mightn't sound too good for MS but it's more a reflection of my lazinessOnz wrote:how do you get over the cold start issues?

I haven't. As far as I know there are a few settings on MS to play for for cold starts.Onz wrote:So its just a matter of tuning up the ICV then? I have heard of ppl using the E39 M5 ICV for cold starts. Have you heard anything on that?
Cranking pulsewidths, afterstart enrichment, warmup enricment.
E46 M3 CSL but dreaming of another E30.
it´s in the afterstart enrichment.
most likely to much fuel or not enough. it just takes dialling in.

Yeah that's the one I need to play with because she kicks then dies but I've noticed that I have to give her just a little throttle to keep her going so proably I'm going to fix the idle valve first (or just remove my idle "restirctor")

Well had problems with #4 loosing compression and build up of crank case pressure so I ran it on 5cyls for a while.
so not to leak oil eveywhere.
so bought a pre facelift engine of Aziz stock headbolts
E36 steering rack of Driftworks forum
E36 kit of Dave M3
and hired Chris Warburton for a day to help me and do my subframe bushings.
All in all the change is amazing. Chris-W is a hero.
definitely the best person I have done businees with in the E30 world.

The change is amazing,
also had bad gearbox rubber and one engine rubber mounts.
steering coupling was also pretty much dead.

Been on the dyno with the early STOCK engine
higher hp one is stock ´91 engine with motronic and remap.
This is vems and ´86 engine

Bear in mind this ´86 engine has NEVER been opened whatsoever so this is what happens after 22years
of driving
Tomorrow I´m going to check the compression.
Timing is around 35-42deg from peak torque to peak hp.
I´ll check my logs and report back.

The new one is the blue one.
Another thing I just noticed doing a review of the log I did on the dyno the engine is loosing flow at higher rpm´s because of the throttle body (lowering air pressure in the manifold)
So it´s a restriction on a STOCK engine.
stock throttle body starts beeing a restriction at 3600rpm!!
This is not an assumption but registering in my logs on a dyno.
I´ll say a BBTB is definetely an upgrade on any b25.
It goes from 100kpa down to 93kpa at WOT.
I´m going to mod it slightly and see what happens.

update.
turns out the old block had early pistons so it was a high compression one ,
no wonder it was so nice.
anyway.
update #1.
compression test after dyno runs shows weak #6 cyl (8bar) while all the other ones where 12-13bar
update #2.
turbo is in the works.
Stage III from TCD ( T40E 60trim ) and TCD top mount manifold

I´m going to be running 1bar on a M20B28
M52 crank
M20B20 rods
M20B25 pistons (late)
ARP headbolts
Stage III TCD/UUC clutch kit (450lbs + )
TIAL 38mm
TIAL BOV
Well sized intercooler
42lb injectors
VEMS
"3 downpipe, exhaust and inline silencers.
Compression is 9.16:1 which will suit perfect for the level of boost and normal in town driving.
HP shall be 400hp and torque 400lbs
full boost by 3k in the last 3 gears, probably slightly later in the first two.
Some pics from the block work
this is a E34 block so I´m going to be drilling for the dipstick.

I´m also working on making the TCD manifold + TCD turbo work without an adapter to fit RHD vehicles. It´s very close
here are a few from when I was working on the first head.

We do what then??

After a quick look at the ports and comparison to the burn pattern on the outside of the exhaust ports they are a very solid source of more air flow. As per alpinas own modifications.
No mods will be done to this 2.8 port wise.

I'd love to see this once it's finished....where abouts in derby are you??? I've never seen you about (all be it you've probably been off the road a while as this thread shows)

car´s not of the road at all, it´s used every day, and this engine is just a secondary block
I´m pretty close to the city center actually and not seen either of you guys
I did meet some a E30 fan at ATS autocenter on kedleston road the other day, he had a friend with a turbo e30, stock management and minimal boost.

yea.
should be possible , normanton is pretty close by.
I need to go visit Steve Nightingale on friary for some minor parts soon

I´m looking to get another power steering pump,
bracket for the glove box (haven´t ever had one in the car)
then I need a few things of a normal 325i engine.

That would probably be the best place to get parts but they are a tad expensive, you could also try Ian Harrington in Friargate (he might have some parts depending on what you need)

He is based in Friar Gate as well. This is his address and telephone number: 10a Friar Gate, Derby, DE1 1BU, 01332 332421. He mainly does service and repair but might have some parts (worth a try).

Ok,
thanks.
I´ll also go check out the junkyard by ASDA & B&Q

I´m picking up a 2,8 crank on sunday to finish the 2,8 M20 build

awesome project. should make 400 whp at 25 psi easy. im running a t4 on a 2.0 cosworth at 32 psi for 408 whp.

25psi?
I don´t need anything like that, I´ll need no more then 1.2bar at most(17.5psi).
I´m trying to get 400hp at 1bar.

will be interesting to see what it achieves on the dyno
theoretically for power to cc if my cosworth engine was a 2.8 it would achieve a theoretical 571 bhp at 32 psi 7500 rpm.
your engine should be good off boost aswell with 8.1 and a 2.8

Awesome.
"Pass me the wheel before you hurt yourself, mate."
Just picked up the 2,8 crank yesterday.
MLS gasket
MSD coil
ARP headbolts
arrived the other day
Will be able to get the bottom end going and finish the engine assembly soon

Have been finally busy working on this thing.

Exhaust is a "3 deal.

Front to mid section ready

Start of the back section.

Overall shot of the engine bay.

Bottom of this pic you can see a EMAP sensor.

It´s running as of today.
Exhaust note is great.
Response is great
I´ll be maxing the 450cc´s in a few weeks time.
Should happen at about 1.2-1.3bar boost.
I´ll report back in a few about how the boost settles in.
