Hi there
Picked up my E30 the other day and all was well. but since working on it (been no further than the driveway) the "CHECK" lights started flashing.
As i have no manual for the car can anyone give me any pointers that i can have a look at. Cheers
plus the inspection lights on, is that like a service light??
new to E30s so forgive me ignorance

When you say checklight do you have a check control panel on the headlining? and mean the one in the main instrument cluster? if so this is normal.
When you start your car the light will flash, and your brae check light on the panel will be on, until you test the brakes by pressing the brake panel. As soon as you have pressed the brake pedal the light will go off.
Unless of course there is another problem but try that for now.
Also inspection light indicates its time for the inspection 1 or 2 details here: http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... rtmenu.htm

Nope, you need a bent paperclip / bit of wire & 30 seconds spent on the search function of this very website for the relevant instructions!Dveight wrote:you need a resetting tool its a little computer that resets them, go on ebay should be bout £10

ok lets start again.
1. whenever you put the keys in the ignition and turn on you will notice the brake lights indicator LED light will come on the overhead check panel and the CHECK light will flash on the instrument cluster. once the brake is pressed they should both go off.
2. if it is still flashing then there is another fault, again indicated by the correspoding LED on the over head panel, such as low oil, high beam not working, low washer fluid etc. you must acknowledge the fault by pushing the check switch on the overhead panel, at this point the red light(s) will remain on, but the CHECK light on your instrument panel should stop flashing.
3. a common occurence on these cars is the brake bulbs sometimes may be loose and the system will sometimes diagnose it as a faulty brake light, it will illuminate the over head ''brake light'' LED and cause the instrument check light to flash, again pushing the check button will stop the flashing light, but you must turn the ignition off and on again to clear the overhead LED signal.
A seperate system is the oil service light and service indicators, they are found on the instrument panel as either green lights with the ignition on that will turn off, these green lights will gradually extinguish over time and then turn to orange then red, this signals you should have the car seviced (it does not mean it needs servicing its only a time related sequnce) and then there is the inspection light which again will come on after a time and remain lit.
to reset these you can buy the tool or simply open the diagnostic plug in the engine bay, and using a paperclip of short piece of wire and the ignition off you short pins 7 and 11, turn on the ignition, wait 5-10secs and the sevice lights will reset, repeat the porceedure to extinguish the inspection light. If this does not work then your service indicator (SI) batteries are probably flat.... thats another thing.
hope that helps
