The other option is to buy £1500 of turbo'ed jap crap. Must be some jap shitter out there, rwd with over 200bhp?
200bhp for £1500???

if you have the skill to do the job then an m20 can be rebuilt for £500.

m3.3.1 m20 thread - now running, chip needed - any volunteers?

Ive read some other threads on engine swaps and people say some are pretty simple?
Which of the donor engines actually give out 200bhp? or are they about 190?
I have done one on a peugeot with a mate and we had the swap and running in a day, is it a bit more complex in an E30? Is there just a straight swap on the M50/52?
If it makes more sense and is more achievable DIY style then i might go for that.
Cheers so far everyone

If you go to www.335i.de there is loads of information on the M30 engine conversion. This i think is the simplest for the money your talking about. On one of the pages it aslo gives some power figures for the different variations of that engine from different models. However ed325i makes a good point when he says
Think the M50/52 swap is more involved, especially on the electrical side.
The actual power of higher mileage 15 year old motors may fall short of these figures. This where people go wrong thinking they can pull a engine out of a scrap e34 and its going to make the quoted power.

Yes you would be hard pushed to get that sort of work done for £1500, but it is possibe if you know the right peolpe. The added cost of a 6 branch manifold, re map etc will take the cost close to £2500. As its been touched on here, i have to agree that stand alone management will help get the most from it and remove the AFM which is a BIG restrictor.agent006 wrote:I agree. Mine is looking at being £2500, but that's with a new head, schrick cam, HT manifold and custom remap.Theo325 wrote:I think you would be hard pushed to do that lot (not including the 6 branch) for £1500e30m3s50b32 wrote:There is a 30bhp gain to be found from a head and cam, cost depends on where you go to get it done. Expect to pay £1500 if you include NEW OE rockers, uprated valve springs etc with larger valves, have the head work done, and a suitable cam. Obviously the ECU will need adjusting, but the gain is there. A good 6 branch will help, but that is an extra cost on top.
The next stage from here is to go larger capacity, 2.7 being the most common option. You can then have a genuine 235bhp. But it all adds up in £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£
why not start with a good base and work your way up. What do you want from a car to start with and what is your timeframe? You might decide that u want to do things over time then £1500 in one go might not need to be spent. You may get another student loan next year or even a hardship grant then you can think of even better things. but the 24v lump is a good starting point if you can get it done properly.
thanks for the suggestions, i think i would prefer to tune the engine as it is and not replace it as ive done that before on other cars already.
i would be looking at slowly doing the work bit by bit probably, im in no rush im only young lol
as for a student loan i wish! im a graduate and missing the interest free life style...
like the sound of a cam, removing the afm adding a 6 branch and getting a good remap...rough prices for the whole lot please? or a break down and a suggestion of which order is best to do things in so i get a constant increase in power.
i dont mind losing some low down power as i drive a 309 mi16 so i dont drive below 4000 anyway, slowly going deaf.
cheers

You guys mentioned Ireland Engineeering with a 3.1 M20 kit, what Crankshaft do they use for the M20, what engine is the 3.1 crank from, what bmw?
cheers

Well mate, I think you are going the right way. In my opinion 200BHP is MORE than enough for a road car in an E30 chassis. I have difficulty going full throttle anywhere in town in my car. Occasionally I need to back off on the motorway as well . But all depends where you live I guess

Cam: a CAT CAM (273/273 or something recommended)
Megasquirt ECU upgrade (can be bought as a kit or assembled by Ant as a plug and play kit)
Mapping - very important to budget for some help on this, just in case you need help.
This is the best bet for around £1500 (maybe more) I'd guess and will get close to, if not more than 200bhp.
