any helpful hints or known general faults these have would be appreciated.

Looks okay for £1500 or so, shame it's an auto as they have a habit of losing reverse gear.

The diesel pump giving up the ghost is probably the worst thing that can happen on these older diesels. If it goes, you may as well scrap the car. As Andy states, the autobox can be a problem in old age. Evidence of regular gearbox oil and filter changes is a must. Don't believe BMW's sealed for life nonsense.

cheers guys, ive heard about these diesel pump failures before, i take it they are very expensive to replace.
do they have a life expectancy, or just pop whenever.

i'd also imagine the auto box/T.converter are also an expensive item.
