strange noise

please help, i am going barmy. when i start my car everything is ok, then after bout 5 min driving a noise start and gets louder, sounds like it is under the passenger side rear floor. i thought it may be prop or diff, but it is there whether in gear /neutral/moving /stopped/clutch up or down, if i leave car for say 20 min its gone for a few mins.

Sounds like one of the old externaly mounted fuel pumps is on it's way out? - is your E30 around the age of 1986?

its an 83 mate, i am bloody glad bout that, as crossed my mind yesterday, is it a hard fix to change it....btw had 2 periods of what appeared to be fuel starvation yest, chhers thanks for your help

I have had the back seat up, and the noise is coming from the pump/level sender there, now the fuel gauge wasnt working, but i have fixed that now. the noise from there has started since

hi mate just reading through your problem ..
i had the same problem when i bought my sport 5 yrs ago , car was fine until you had driven it for about 5 miles then this irratating noise ..
took it too bmw carrs, they changed rear axle oil .
never heard noise again ..
they thought maybe oil had perished due to car being in storage for years , or numpty had put wrong oil in ,

just update, its defo fuel pump. as it keeps cutting out as in fuel starvation.
