Funny - i was thinking exactly the same recently. In the two years i've been on this forum, i've never seen so many cracked heads! Sadly, i'm one of them!

Just more people on the forum discussing their problems. Any "tech help" forum on any subject always gives the impression that the subject in question is notoriously unreliable, because it's the people with problems that post.
Also, as E30s become cheaper, there're propably more people attempting their own work, who aren't really capable of doing so.
Most E30s have probably done the sort of mileage by now, that makes it inevitable that the head gasket will fail. (aluminium head on iron block - different expansion rates - shear forces on the gasket.)

Also, E30's have passed through that phase where every dodgy scrote had to have one. They are onto E36's now

As a desirable car you will often find people who can afford to buy one but not run one so the maintenance gets skipped or left to Lucas autocentres and the like.

You then start running into problems where hoses and the like have not been checked over properly when serviced. The services have turned into oil and filter changes and the major services are oil & filter plus plugs/air cleaner.

brian - i think you have hit the nail on the head. they are getting to that age where major mechanical work will need dont to keep them tip top. why there are so many shitters.

people if they take an m3 to bmw and they say 2k please will pay.

not on a old 325i sport any more.

i think the same thing will happen to the e30 m3. falls out of a owners group that takes care of them and then falls into monkeys hands who can afford the car but do nto realise the commitment in maintiance!

damn im crap at spelling 2day!
RANT OVER! :)

(cos im getting annoyed at looking so many supposed GOOD sports)

I agree, its depressing looking at so many cars that are hiding so many problems, and the owners honestly believe that FSH means having MOST of the MOTS and a service book that covers it for the first 80,000miles only...

Ask them about how often they flushed the coolant to prevent a cracked head and they look confused

If its a cheap car I dont mind but when someone wants over Ԛ£1k then its got to be perfect in my opinion.

Are 320s as prone to head problems as 325s??

NO but you try telling that to someone with a 325 and all you will hear is how great it is and how much faster it is.

I think it's down to the fact the 325's ports/valves are so massive compared to the puny, almost pointless 320i's to get the extra 3.9 bhp/litre :violin: that the walls of the head are as thick as fag papers.

You never hear of anyone saying how great the cam timing/lift are compared to the 320's though - how odd

I thought this was about the winged variety. I drove threw a swarm last night so think it was like rain. Now the front of my car's an interesting light brown colour, I only washed it on tuesday. :(
