Hi all

Just after a bit of info on reinforcing the rear diff hanger , as iv seen big power e30's pull them off the shell  and after so much time and money invested into my build don't want this to happen.

What are the big power e30's using, or are you running on hope?

Iv read somewhere about using an e36 diff back plate, which has 2 pick up points.

My shell is now at the point of bolting the rear suspension on so now is the time to do the work

Any help is welcome.

cheers

There isn't anywhere for the second mount to bolt if your using a e36 diff plate.

The Z3M diff cover has a stronger mounting point! how much power you gonna have when your done?

I know that matey, but I have access to all tools required for fabrication. etc.

Z3m isn't an option because its the hanger that snaps not the diff plate, ive already installed the z3m bush but if i have the option to make it unbreakable i think i should take it. Also i believe BMW had a few problems with z3m's breaking diff hangers too.

You are best off either reinforcing the diff bracket and where it attaches to the floor with some thicker metal or cut the braket off and weld a base plate thats bigger than the where the bracket attaches to spread the load then make a new bracket and weld it to the base plate.

It would be a lot easier just to reinforce the original, i've seen E30 with rollcages that have a pick up point that connects up to a diff bracket base plate but this is over kill on a road car.

Rossle :Have you got a link?

and i'll try and find a translator

The car is only for trackuse and my cage is only a 6pt but i might have a think.

I think ant adds another skin and seam weld the bracket, but i've been on realoem and can't find the part number for the plate.

with the s38 in my car and almost 10k miles since conversion including hard launches and some drifting mine has been fine so far... when i strip it again and it goes for a respray and maybe a cage, i think i will just mig up some plate over where it joins the floor and then triangulate and strengthen the original bracket onto this plate.

as my suspension isnt extremely hard and subframe and diff bushings are stock this reduces shock on mountings, polybushes or solid ally ones might destroy the diff mounting as it does look weak!

other options include doing the above but triangulating down from the rear turrets or a cage i guess?

Just to show you the work that Kevo has done.

I'm planning on copying this. It really does look unbreakable and if you already doining some welding ,a little more fabrication isn't going to matter.

i was going to sugest that the best way would be to get under an e36 and take the whole diff hanger off, then simply a case of joining to your chassis, which is easyer that it sounds.

with the twin mount you will be pushing up on the right mount and pulling down on the left, this would mean it would be next to imposible for the diff to pull the channel down as it would be trying to turn around the right hand mount instead of just pulling downwards. if that makes any sense.

no point as even if you do use the e36 diff cover it can still pull away as the beam is the ONLY rear Stabilsing bar at the rear best thi would to be develop some anti tramp device from hard launches

I'd do it this way. (these pictures are on this topic on PPF: http://www.pure-pf.com/phpBB2/viewtopic ... c&start=95 )

5mm aluminium-plate (diff is from E28 535)

Still, what's the point in this operation? You need way over 500hp before you've problems with diff ripping off...

Normal E34 diff can't take as much as E28 diffs, expect E34 M5 diff which has handled over 1000hp in vsmotors M5 (I think the diff is stock, not sure though). ( www.vsmotor.no )

Anyways, E28 525 diff is "the diff", most durable and toughest diff BMW has ever made.

I like the look of the E36 diff cover mod.. More than enough for the kind of torque most of us are generating I'd say?

Might consider doing the same myself. ... Pehaps later on though. Need to get the stupid thing driving first. It's be nice to combine that mod with a triangulation to the rear 'strut towers'; though in practice, without a cage I can't see that making a huge difference unless you have turreted the rear and are running coilover type shocks.

Cool none the less.

Keep us posted!

I don't really agree, also the beam can be reinforced aswell with out much bother, i.e weld a thicker plate where it bolts, same as james3320 has done with his m50 turbo.

Any how the proof is in the pudding and i can't find any links of e36 carries being distroyed

Intersting work on the e36 dual mount from a conversion on s14.net you make need to swap the trigger wheel and speedo sensor around
