Was just wondering if any of you E30 M3 owners have the same problem, if it is a problem to begin with.

When i bought my car from independent motors in reading about six years ago, when i recieved my log book it never came with an engine number logged on the log book.

Is this normal with imports.

Reason why i ask is when i was selling my vehicle, some people actually tried to make me feel like some form of criminal, its amazing how eveyone that turned up to buy my car was an E30 M3 Specialist.

I doubt if I own a single car where the engine number matches up with the V5, TBH!
Send the number and V5C off to Swansea and get it added.

Nearly every M3 i have owned has stated "engine number not known " on the V5, i have seen others with variations of the vin listed as the engine number :o
Nothing to worry about Patrick. The joys of trying to sell a bespoke car ! :(

Hello, i just picked up a E34 import from South Africa, and yes that has the engine number on the log book, but i think it's just a case of, if people have filled that box in or not. Thanks

My sport evo has the correct engine number on the log book, the Evo2 has the same numbers for both VIN and engine numbers on the log book... obviously in reality, this is not the case. The Sport evo is a UK car, where the Evo2 was imported.

Any car imported by Munich Legends will 99% of the time have "Not Known" in the engine number box. Only the fear the DVLA wil fuck it up and put the car on a Q reg has stopped me from adding it.

BTW the engine number on my car is fully visable should the question ever arise.

Thanks everyone again for the info.

Rich W this is my one fear at the moment. The guy who is buying my car wants the log book with the engine number on it first even though i have had the conversion done and good info from Karan regarding his conversion and his Log Book.

DVLA except the M5 engine conversion but they want the engine number and as i dont know the history of the engine or even if it has an engine number i am in a panic just incase they want to Q plate my car, which will defo make me :x not to mention devalue my car BIG TIME! fingers crossed.

An engine conversion alone will not be enough to get your car "Q" plated.

Don't worry about it - the DVLA don't give a flying feck about the engine number anyway, they only care if you put it up into a more expensive road tax bracket changing it.

I wouldn't be in any hurry to be telling the DVLA that my car which previously had a 2.3 engine now has a 3.6 engine, £25 per day congestion charge, kerr-ching !
Patrick, run that scenario past the victim, you might get off the hook :)

I wouldn't worry victim will soon be back when he realises that every other m3 he looks at doesn't have the engine number on the v5 either. If hes that worried about it there are very few available cars for him.

DVLA will not Q plate your car though, as I explained in another post today, since the age and ID of your car is not in dispute the situation will never arise because it has not been radically altered. An engine swap does not count as radically altered.

Well This is the message.below i received back from DVLA, and i hope after this they dont try to Q plate my Car.

"It may be helpful if I explain that if the engine does not have an engine number the V5C can still be returned for amendment. Instead of inputting an engine on the application form you should write 'Not Stated' in the appropriate section."

Will update this thread probably in 14 days once i recieve feedback in the form of a letter or maybe my log book back.

This all goes back to how much attention to detail the original importer, purchaser in the EEC paid when they completed the paperwork...simple as that...if you know the details add them and send them in

after all the hassle i went through nearly ten weeks of my log book going to and from dvla, the engine number etc i cant even get hold of the buyer. He has probably lost interest or already bought one. Looks like my car will be going back up again for sale for a third time
