Hello people.

I'm going to be needing a new gearbox at some point in the near future, as mine is on its way out (thanks to previous driver I'm guessing as I don't thrash my car). I just wondered what exactly is the Getrag 260 gearbox? No smart answers like 'a gearbox' please :).

Thanks
Dave.

It's a gearbox.

Nothing really that special about the box.

The 260 is the amount of torque (NM) it's suppose to take, but can take much more, apparently.

Is your car a Sport?

Fair enough, I just saw someone on here selling one. My car is a sport, is that just the standard box that comes with it ?

You already have a Getrag 260.

Your car has different ratios than the usual Getrag 260 though.

So if there was someone on here selling a '325i Getrag 260 for £40, you think I should buy it if I'm going to need a new box at some point. How much do they usually go for ?

That's about right for a usual Getrag 260.

Sport boxes go for around £150-£250.

what wrong with the box? they are a very strong unit

Apart from the chatter in neutral and the rear oil seal leaking they really go on forever

Basically I noticed about 6 months ago that when I'd been driving for a while, whenever the clutch wasn't pressed down I could hear a horrible clunking sound. I was told that this could have been the clutch release bearing. After taking it to a garage near me, due to usual guy being on holiday, I was told it would be £420 + VAT for a new clutch. Promptly abandoning that idea I took it to my usual mechanic when he returned. After he'd had a look at it he told me it was actually the gearbox that was causing the noise, but did say that I could leave it as it wasn't going to do any damage and the noise would just get worse. At the same time he replaced my exhaust manifold gaskget, which had previously been making the car shake and wobble a bit when idling, when he'd done that the noise was significantly reduced. Just thought I'd get a new box if there was one going on here, as I'll be needing it in the future.

Sorry for the essay :D

there is a sport box for sale at the moment in the forsale section i can vouch that the one for sale is a sport box ( i removed it from the car!!!) the seller is e21jason and hes a good bloke hes after £150 which as you can see above is the lower end of the price range for a sport box so hes not ripping anyone off
