thanks for the comment's guy's,
obviously if it's too loud i'll have to put another silencer in the system,
i want it to have a deep v8 baseline,
i'll fire it up later in the week to see what it sonds like   .
next job is to convert it to manual.

much respect to you glenn. i think you have got the whole zone keeping a close eye on your project. its just insane. 400+bhp in an e30 = years and years of fun. good luck with it. i will be keeping a close eye on this thread.

i done the manual coversion this afternoon, all except the pipe that goes from the master to slave, i'll source one from my favorite scrappy next time i'm in there.
also this afternoon i fitted the "fly-by-wire" throttle.
i'll put pics up of these tomorrow.

Hello mates! Big resteppa 2 glenn 4 this mental project.
As I've said I am also carrying out a project - implanting an m30b35 lump into my e30. sadly i've only managed to throw out the old lump - the m20b20 and i've painted the engine bay (actually in winter all the car has been repainted). So today again I talked to the guy who should carry out the project (because i have no place, no time and not enough skills/knowledge to do it by myself). And he suggested me not to take the 3,5 lump but to go for the 4,4 v8 lump from x40i. I told him about the mess with the wiring - and he replied that i have to buy only the engine without ecu, and, to avoid problems with this complicated system just to buy a programmable ecu - smth like MegaSquirt. What you guys think about this idea?

you could use the MS with an earlier 4.0 M60 but not on the M62 as those all have VANOS and no aftermarket ECU can control that as yet.

you'd need to upgrade to MSnS ( and spark) to run the V8 too as its distrubutor less and has individual coil packs for each cylinder.

good projetc dude, well worth the effort, the engines are quite compact once all the emission gizmos and manifold cats are removed.

keep us posted

Glenn, you da man indeed

yes batch,
i think you could run the 4.4 v8 with an aftermarket ecu
, but the m5 lump has 4 vanos units, and computer controlled oil pick ups
in the sump( one normal pick up, and 2 pick ups in the corners that are controlled by "g" force sensors on each side of the sump)
there are a few e30's around with the M62 engine(4.0/4.4)

Incorrect

Motec M800 can control up too 4 vanos cams,
remapping a V8 with double Vanos would cost silly money
especially the double vanos
With great challenges comes great engineering.

My idea was to go for a 4,0 v8 (the earlier version), i dunno the engine code and have no idea does this lump have vanos or not  Maybe you can give me some advice? Are there any 4,0 or 4,4 v8's that can be controlled by aftermarket ecu?

think i've fu**ed my ecu.
i was connecting everything up so i could start it up,
i slipped with a 10mm spanner and touched the outer casing of the ecu
and the positive of the battery.
now it wont start!!!!
i've also been still cutting bits off the loom so unsure if i've cut too much off the loom or i've fu**ed the ecu.
so i rung bmw for a price on a new one, 620 plus vat, which i thought was good.
but then when we started discussing coding it with the keys and ews box, he told me, quite abruptly that because i've installed "that engine in an e30", that "bmw wont be able to do anything for me"
:banghead: :banghead: :cens: :cens:
after i calmed down a bit i phoned 'chipped uk' who told me
he's had a few people done that and no problem he can sort it out for around 50 quid   :woohoo: :woohoo:

I stand corrected Gunni

does the Motec actually offer full range control ? I know attempts had been made but all info I can find points to the vanos being fully advanced or fully retaded only, with I guess nothing in between

Glenn....... be careful dude  try working @ glacial pace, works for me @ the Mo

I think the E34 V8 is the non-vanos engine so it should be able to be run with and after market ECU ?

E39 V8 is vanos i think ?

Non VANOS V8s have flat fronted timing and cam covers, one camshaft sensor on the left hand bank

VANOS units have trapezoidal(sp ?) covers when viewed from above and two cam sensors, one per bank plus VANOS solenoids on each bank.

Avoid the engines with the electronic stat, its rubbish and they seem to suffer with hot running issues which can lead to major grief.

Whichever you choose, FFS stick a new stat and waterpump on it for good measure

Ant.... when it comes to sticking the 4.4 one in an e30.... electronics wise is it a case of modding at the c101 connector or do i need to use the whole car loom much like glenn is doing with his e39 m5 lump?

cheers much appreciated

Ive been told this for my S50 conversion. I think its becasue when BMW plug it on to the computer to code it, the computer searches for sensors and stuff that is no longer there cause its in an E30.
The computer comes up with an error and then cant code the EWS.
