Gday guys,
I've got a Delphin Grey 325 Sport, currently undergoing a complete restoration, which is pretty much stock and i know pulled 170 horses from the factory in 1988. First off, I just wanted to know what the difference in performance effects is between increasing my car's torque and increasing bhp. Also, what do you guys recommend for big power increases in my car without anything along the line of turbos or superchargers, which can be purchased/done relatively easily?

Easily but not cheap would be:

6 branch manifold
big bore throttle body
itg air filter
maf conversion
cam upgrade
decent exhaust system
chip/remap/standalone

Later engines seem to loosen up more (loose more) than the early higher compression engines.
325i Tech 1 Touring, breaking.

2.5 high comp. M20, 3.64 LSD, Fully undersealed, Spax springs & Bilstein shocks, s/s exhaust, Alpina rep wheels and more.

3.5 engine? Either that or I believe the E36 2.8 may go in. Something multivalve might help?

You can tune your existing engine but I'm a firm believer in, if you can bolt something in it's place that makes more power in standard form - do that, then if you still want more power you can do all the tuning to that. Plus a standard engine will be under less stress than a tuned one.

your not going to get big power increases cheaply without the use of turbo,supercharger or nos.simple as that.

Well OP hasn't told us how deep his pockets are or how much power he wants, but you will never get more than 200bhp out of a M20 that hasn't been stroked and rebuilt or FI.

We know what you don't want no FI and no NOS do you think your power targets are realistic? Even the mods I've listed arn't cheap they will run into thousands of pounds.

Are you against having your engine rebuilt as a 2.7/2.8/2.9/3.0 or 3.1L M20, would still look stock and withought opening up the engine and checking no one would be any the wiser. Again the higher the displacement the more £Â£Ã‚£ you need.

considering how much it costs to start rebuilding engines though, longer throw sports cranks, regrinds, bearings, etc, etc, etc... it might be better to try and find someone with a crashed Alpina 2.7 or something similar and chucking the whole engine in.

I'd always try and buy a ready built high power engine as it'll cost you a quater the price of rebuilding the one you have - all those parts like ARP bolts, etc, plus engineering work, lightening and balancing, etc all add up!!

If you want to keep the standard engine and not turbo it etc then 2.8 stroker is the only way to go if you can afford it. Then after that start adding on the bolt ons to release a bit more power
