Hi,
Does anyone know how to go about putting a private plate on retention & how much it costs?
Kind regards.

get down to the local dvla office, i believe it costs £80 to retain it for the year, or £110 if you need to take it off a vehicle.

Just paid DVLA £105 to remove and retain the plate off the Daimler.I had to hand in the V5C,current MoT and the tax disc.An 'age related' mark was issued in two days along with a replacment MoT.The replacement V5C arrived 6 days after my inital visit to my local DVLA office, despite their gloomy prediction that 'it takes up to 6 weeks, Daimlerman'... Unfortunatley the plate bid up to £360 on fleabay against a reserve off only £500,tight gits... looks like it will end up on the touring. The 'age related' mark I received was AFW220A,incedently, not a million miles from my old Morgan DFW660X...

Then you can't remove the plate from the car. End of.

As Daimlerman said it's £105 and then around £20 per year you keep it on retention. I have one that I really should allocate to one of my turdsb4gga83 wrote:get down to the local dvla office, i believe it costs £80 to retain it for the year, or £110 if you need to take it off a vehicle.

"Vehicles taking part in the Cherished Transfer scheme must be currently licensed, subject to annual testing (MoT/HGV) and available for inspection. However, to help individuals whose vehicles, for unexpected reasons are unable to be re-licence, DVLA will still consider applications where:
the tax disc for the donor vehicle has expired no more that 12 months previously. (Prior to 1 December 2005 the concession was six months). Please note that to qualify for this concession, there must be no break between the natural expiry date of the licence (tax) and the commencement of SORN. This concession does not apply if you have submitted your licence (tax) for a refund "

JBH is right. If the car has no mot, then as long as the tax ran out, and you didn't cash it in, then you have 1 year to remove the plate. There after it's probably a no no.
I know this because i removed my D14SLF plate off a car that had no mot, but my tax hadn't ran out.
Get down to your local DVLA and speak to them. They will probably say the above to you aswell.
Oh, and as of November 2007 they no longer need to check the car (like they used to on cars over 15yrs old).
