I have done a search on this but cannot find much information relating to my problem.

I bought a full kit the other week of a LHD car that had already had the loom extended, via crimping. I have soldered and insulated these joints and gone about fitting it to the car. I have mounted the ECU on the drivers side underdash, plugged the green connector into the back of the speedo, earthed and fitted the steering stalk on the column, plugged the connector in the top right hand plug on the accesories box, and also connected the round plug that goes near the bulkhead, and mounted the motor and cable etc etc. The clutch switch, although not on its proper switch yet (as i cant find a bracket) is cable tied close the moment as if the clutch were open.

However, the crusie control simply does not work. Both my brake lights work, and the corresponding fuse is also intact. I had a look at simon13's cruise and i swear he had an earth near the glovebox too but upon further examination of my loom i dont seem to have one there?

Any ideas?

The clutch switch connector needs to be shorted out for it to work.

The clutch switch works the opposite way to the brake light switch, short circuit when pedal released, open circuit when pressed.

Cheers,

No, it needs to be linked together.

I think Iain is right, because on an auto setup dan you just get a plug which is a loop to join the circut. I had this plug because mine came from my old auto but i'll be fooked if i know where i put it!

The clutch bracket has just gone NLA from bmw too which is a pain, it was only £1.

Loom has to have an earth connection somewhere. Will be a brown wire, from pin 23 of the ECU.

Its earthed on the column, is this enough?

I will put those wires together tomorrow and see what happens!

I very much doubt that the ECU earth connection is on the column!
Check (with a meter) if you have zero ohms between a car body earth terminal and the brown wire at the cruise ECU connector.

Just trying to dig my multimeter out now. However, there is definately only one earth connection that i have to make in the loom as far as i can see. The cruise control stalk has its own earth on the column, which i have done, but i have traced the brown wire from the ECU through the car and it just ends up going through the bulkhead to the actuator box in the engine bay; there doesnt seem to be a ring connector or anything on the loom that i can see?

I have also cut the clutch switch wire as said and soldered them together and it still isnt working, am going to look with a metre now. I also rechecked the connections on the ECU and speedo, white plug and accessories box and they all seem to be ok!

Will report back with metre readings soon.

Alternitavely, measure any voltage between the brown wire on the ECU and body earth, with everything powered up. Any voltage here, and you've found the problem.

There is .07v between the ECU grounding point at the glovebox and the ECU wire. There is continuity between all the earths; both the ECU earth, gloveox earth and steering column earth wires.

Should i connect the clutch switch back and and close it shut?

Ok spent the morning at simons mounting the bracket properly and i am a lot more happy with the positioning of it now.

Also found another earth that comes of the white plug loom if that makes sense?

Earthed that and still nothing. Also picked up the auto blanking plug that goes in the end of the clutch switch plug and it STILL doesnt work.

Really dont have many ideads left now!

Both! Brake switch works and clutch switch has the original loop on it now.

Dan,

What speed are you driving when testing it ? You need to be above 30mph for it to engage.

Ian.

Yep realised that when i was on the phone to simon driving up my road at 3m.p.h. trying to get it to work

Have been on the motorway etc trying it and still nothing, i am still convinced its a loom problem as it has been converted to rhd and it is all very wrong!

Dan,

If it helps, I've got a spare (converted LHD) loom in the garage. It was on my car for a few years, but I eventually replaced it with a new RHD loom.

Cheers,

Ian.

the earth is working fine i have tested it with a volt meter

the power is coming to the unit

the stalk is showing power on different wires when the button is moved

the speed signal wire is connected to the back of the speedo

the blue/brown wire i have on the car when i put the car in p or n it show 12v+ when its in drive it shows 0.0 is this the correct wire to be connected to the blue/brown wire on the cruise control loom

I'm still stumped on mine too
Everything is connected up right. It has a new stalk from America sinc the old one was broke when somebody tried to rob the 325 it was in before.

I have learned a fe things to check now though reading this thread. Must get the multimeter out again tomoro.

Failing that, I'm going swaping bits of the system with a friends one on Sunday to track down the problem :D

Sorted mine out in the end, it was the cable! Was mounted a bit wrong in the end. I used an m44 1.9 e36 compact bowden cable as the m20 one is completley useless due to its size.

What cable are you boys using?

P.S. Dave got the spacers!

ah cool. Something to keep you busy for 2moro so, lol. The paint didn't turn out as good as I'd hoped. The oven in my apparment doesn't lend itself well to oven baking :?

I think I'm using a 4pot cable too since it's shorter than the usual one. Although it is abit loose on the throttle. Might try fix it tomoro and see if it makes any difference.
