i'm thinking of getting / making some banded steelies for my car but i can't find a decent donor wheel

ideally, a 16" with stretched tyres would rock my socks!

i've been thinking the following so far:
1) E30 14" steel. probably too small...
2) Golf G60 15" steelies. coooool on a golf but are they a direct fit?
3) BMW mini 15" steelies. not seen a pic of them but they must be available?
4) something else! is there a 16" honda wheel or something out there? heeeeelp!

any comments / suggestions?

oh, i think i might get this lot to do it...

I had 9x16 banded steels last yr, they were originally off a Laguna.

Mini steels have the wrong centre bore (too small) you will be ok with VW steels tho...

Hope that helps.

A company called Widewheels do them over here, I got mine from Holland.

Gareth,

bmw mini steels are the right size and bore etc, but they are dearer than golf steels but how many steel wheels come in 15" not many.

there are 16's about but not many.

i do like the g60 steels but i'd like semi-stretched tyres so they'll be fairly low profile and i'll have a stupidly low rolling diameter.

banded steels need stretched tyres otherwise it is pointless, will look rubbish otherwise.

i'm still going to need a base wheel though aren't i?

i'd like 16x8" front, 16x9 rear. hopefully, under relatively standard arches. coilovers will help control scrubbage too!

I gurantee new mini rims dont fit, I had some machined to fit my old Golf which have same centre bore as BMW.

Laguna is only 4x100 steel I know of, VW do one but its 5x100.

Here's my old banded steels...

And my 9.5x14's on my gti...

oh, what wheels are the grey ones? 14" E30?

Im fairly sure the BMW mini has 57mm centre bore, same as the E30, but the offset isnt right - the 17x7 Alpinas wont fit the E30 as they are somewhere around et48 IIRC. The 16x5.5 steel wheels are et45.

VWs (Im thinking Mk2 Golf, Corrado) are 57.1mm which is why the Corrado discs need to be machined down to fit the centre bore of the E30 wheel when they are used for the 280mm brake kits.

the thing is the offset doesnt matter, bmw mini wheels will fit but they are wrong offset, but as Gareth is going to have them banded this doesnt matter as they will make them to what ever offset you require.

Well thats a bit of a bugger - glad I didnt buy the Alpina wheels to try them now :o
I know the VW bore is bigger than the E30, but everything Ive read says 57mm for the mini?? :?

vauxhall used a 15" steel on their mk 3 & 4 astras in a 4 stud fitting which should be good for use on the e30. the ones on the mk 3 sport were a little different in design than the normal lots of holes around the edge type too if youre looking to be just a little more different. tried to find a piccie but if you have to buy a car designated sport but with steel wheels then you would probably keep it to yourself.

i've just lobbed the figures into a spreadsheet so i can easily compare offsets etc once extra width is added...

if i use the 6J15 G60 steels (ET35 afaik) and band the outer rim on the front pair to 7.5J16, i get ET10. then a 8.5J16 rear will be ET3. is this excessive? ideally, i want to just modify the outers on the wheels.

does anyone know what sort of ET / width figures i need for a proper euro look, like dips's chockolate wagon?

payday is looming and i have a bonus coming my way! time to get the ball rolling methinks!

my choices are narrowed down to:
1) BMW mini. it's BMW and i can open the bore out from 56.1 to 57.1 easily enough
2) Vauxhall astra, i'd have to open the bore out on these too so BMW ones would be better i reckon!
2) Golf G60. again very suitable but now bmw, good looking though and the right bore
3) Renault laguna 16", i'd need to make up some adaptor sleeves for the 60.1 centrebores but that's easy enough.

i've been randomly looking for 16" laguna steels but no luck so far, they all seem to be 15". milko, do you happen to know what model they were from? also, did you ever fit them to be sure of caliper clearance etc? eg, no spacers required etc?

Sorry m8, just seen this!

I fitted them up, but I had 15mm spacers on, due to the fact the banding shop cocked up what offset I had specified...

The banding shop in Holland sourced the rims, so I'm not sure where they came from, but a friend has just had a set done, so I'll ask him what they are off, should see him Sun.

P.S I have a brand new set of G60 steels here if your intrested... :D

Or gareth - if you do it and try them out - you up for making and selling another set of 4 or 6? ;)

it would have to be an insulting offer... if they are new as it'll cost £40 to get them down to me. interested though. i'm going to have an ask-around the local fabricators to see if anyone wants to take on the welding side of it and see how i go.

it's going to be expensive though, probably twice the price of some 15" BBS once it's all done :?
