Does anyone rate Autoglym anymore?
Moderator: martauto
Ive been tryin to get to grips with the whole detailing process which is quite confusing! I want to go way OTT on my paint work and not sure where to ever start! I've always used autoglym shampoo and polish but this product line hardly ever gets mentioned! I'm thinking zaino or meguiars??

this is my beemer, there are many like it but this ones mine
(OO=[][]=OO)
I stand by it, brilliant product.
Is that right? I use the polish because everyone I know who uses it, says the opposite, it's not abrasive like other polishes can be. I know its more of a middle of the market type product, but to this day hasn't affected the paint on my car.hubble wrote:I would avoid using autoglym products. The polishes can be quite abrasive. I use Autosmart shampoos and Megs - very good.
For shows and events The Swissvax carbath is imo No. 1
Only polish I use and like it, would try some others but wouldn't know where to start with proper detailing

Autoglym stuff is good. People on forums like detailingworld etc. can be brand snobs so some stuff can get slated unfairly.
I always use Autoglym stuff especially their Super Resin Polish which I find great.

super resin polish is a good product but its also an abrasive, gets rid of swirls quite well. i use to use it and decided that i fancied a change and bought a load of megs stuff but dont really like it so will be returning back to auto glym, the only thing from the megs range i will keep using is the gold class wax as it gives good results.

autoglym is fine for your average once a month sunday polisher but the more serious bufty perfectionists seem to prefer other products. i dont know if its really a case of noticeable differences to the finish or more a case of personal preferences to other favoured product.im sure its the same as most things, one mans sh1te is another mans treasure and down to personal opinion and experience.try it and see for yourself.
i have a large supply of lots of different autoglym products in my shed that havent seen the light of day as i prefer the dirty well used look.
or maybe its just because im to lazy to spend hours polishing my car just for it to get sh4t on by birds and covered in road grime

for someone who rarely polishes their car I think the autoglym does an OK job, but it certainly causes loads of dust. Been using meguiars tech wax for a while now
Do you use sealnts and wax in the same session of washing? Is this the correct order?
1 Shampoo
2 Mild clay
3 Paint cleanser/QD
4 Glaze
5 Sealant
6 Wax
What do you apply each of these products with? I have Autoglym perfect polishing cloths.

i 2nd this. Megs has some great products and since i started using there range i find it more than good enough, just lean to use the right products in the right order and take your time on each application. As Hubble has said Swissvax is a great product. I think it also depends on your needs and wants, if its a good spit and polish i think you could do a lot worse than autoglym, but if you after more of a show look then have a good look around and get as much advice as you can. it can be an addictive process so prepare for some elbow grease!hubble wrote:I would avoid using autoglym products. well depend on how much you want to spend, the cheep ones will do more damage to your paint than good imho.Rik178m wrote:Don't really want to buy a polisher more of an old schooler. But maybe I should be more upto date. Are these 2 handle polishers anygood?
I quite like autoglym, but i have to admit im really impressed with the autosmart products. used the polish at work in the summer and its much bette than autoglym and im pretty sure its a lot cheaper.
Gonna try meguires stuff next i think. Have heard good things about Zymol? for swirls too btw.

save your cash and get a few good micro fibre cloths, bit more hard work but a better all round result. i think you would end up with more swirls with one of those cheap thingsRik178m wrote:Just got a second hand one off ebay for £10 so I'll try it on a hidden bit

Autoglym super resin polish is good stuff imo, I get a big bottle for £8
Cleans the paint up really well, good at removing tar/rubber etc, only thing I cant get it to shift is iron oxide
(bane of my life)
When I clean my paint up usual procedure is-
Hot jet wash the loose crap off
Heavily diluted TFR all over and hot washed off
Wash with some cheapo shampoo and dried
Autoglym super resin
Zaino AIO
Ive got some autoglym shampoo I use for general washing to help the zaino last

i always seem to end up back wiht autoglym, it's decent stuff at a reasonable price that's nice to use and easy to get hold of.
i've tried others that give similar results but are more hard work, others that have a more instant wow factor, but who's effect doesnt last as long.
autoglym SRP is very mildly abrasive so can cause problems if you dont take care using it, but at the same time it's good at removing mild swirl marks, and seems to stop my red car going pink
i used to think it was quite a dusty product which was annoying, but then i discovered good quality microfibre cloths which make it much easier to buff off and seem to drap all the dust leaving a nice clean glossy dust free surface.

IME Autoglym products are not rubbish, but for the cost and longevity (how long it lasts protecting the car) and ease of application, I've found Meguiars Gold Class Liquid Wax is much better at all three.
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... ryId_31511
With MGC-LW, ttere's no dust, and if you get it on plastic it doesn't mark it like AG SRP does. It buffs more easily, and you can apply it when the weather is a bit damp.
Meguiars isn't the best product (I'm sure everyone will tell you), but for me it the best/cheapest which with less effort returns a very good result.
Having said all that, it's all about preparation; get the surface into a very clean state, and then it's easy to get a good shine/wax/protecting layer on the car, and it's easy to keep it that way.
Best/cheapest prep product I've found is 3M Imperial Hand-glaze - it's hard-work, but you only have to do it once to prep the paintwork.
Bilt Hamber make (apparently) the best clay-bar, and their Auto-Balm is excellent (as an alternative to AG-SRP or MGC-LW).

results of 3M IHG, and this look/finish has lasted 18 months, with careful washing and a few applications of MGC-LW.

oddly i tried meguires gold class after reading loads of reviews and hated it. tried it on various different colours / finishes too.
never seems to flash off, so it's always sticky when you try and buff it off. on plastics i didnt think it had marked it turned white after a couple of weeks, and the paintwork seemed to watermark and go patchy within a couple of days in normal uk weather.
on the plus side, when freshly applied it does make a car look stunning, and it smells lovely too.
