curios about width and height and what sort of trouble you'd be in with engine mounts.
There is no doubt it is one of the ultimate conversions, i could only gues what an e46 loom is like.
I have only heard of one fella in poland completing the conversion with many electrical bypass's of somesort having to be done by his friend a bmw worker , i presume he had to bypass loads of airbag checks and god know what else.
has anyone offered an m47 / 320d engine into an e30 bay?

"There is no doubt it is one of the ultimate conversions," -- Yeah for me too, If I could do this I would.
Hope someone has some answers/suggestions. (I wonder how many miles you'd have to drive to make up the cost?)

Not as many if you ran it on bio diesel, as my dad does, at 88p a litre...

yeah it should fit. I used to have an m47 block sat in my garage, same bore spacing as m4x, same flywheel/box fitting etc too, dunno what you'd do for a sump though, not sure you could get an m4x one on - never checked.

well 50mpg for the m47 and 30mpg for the m20 . 400 miles week = 20800 miles a year = 416 galons for the m47 and 694 gallons for the m20 so thats a saving of 278 gallons....

Or to put it another way:
30mpg at £4.75 vs 50mpg @ £5.00 (estimate based on todays average prices)
16 pence per mile vs 10 pence per mile.
6 pence more per mile
Therefore to save £1000 at current prices would be 16,667 miles.
(Unless your uncle owns a chipshop:))

If I'm not mistaken, you can run these engines on veg' oil as well! Even cheaper!
As far as the loom is concerned, your only problem is that you'll probably have to start with the whole car loom, and perhaps have to get somebody to set the ecu to discard messages from the other components of the can-bus (as they won't be present anymore) The golf tdi lump we're putting in a sports car doesn't even need the reprogramming of the can-bus!
I'd say that it would be close to what glenn did on his s62 conversion.
