May well be getting a touring for those family trips with all the flasks of tea, picnic plankets and buggies.
Unfortunately the 316 m40 is a bit of a disaster power wise, I was considering fitting an m42 but would also consider a more modern engine if the electroncis werent a nightmare. basicly i am aiming for 35mpg as long journeys will be on the agenda and something that will make me glad i didnt stick with the 316.
I am totaly out of ideas bar the m42 but even that i'd be lucky to get the fuel economy, would love a more modern bmw petrol/deisiel as the mpg/power is more attractive but the electrics are a no no,
any ideas for a comprimise?
thanks

Sorry missed the 4 pot bit, well I think Max is right BUT that won't be as cheap as the 318is option.

Nothing else out there really apart from the 1.9L M44, but thats not really any better IMO than the M42.

yeah there is the option of the s14 - isnt the 320is the basic version
still i dont want this to run out of hand cost wise and the s14 costs big bucks and then there is the hassle of rhd so its a no no.
I cant seem to find the m42 1.8 and the m44 1.9 engines compared anywhere only that they have similar power and torque despite the extra capacity and one would imagine newer technoilogy - i also no its not impossible to get the e36 loom in so i wouldnt rule it out.

any other thoughts?

Those really are th only viable options. and as you say figures for m42 and m44 are pretty similar.

You're right. It's the wrong engine. Try something different. Anything would be better.
