You may have got some dirt mixed in with the roller bearings, it is a bit of a fiddly job
When fitting these its best to clamp the UJ's to the steering column and rack first, then adjust the shaft to a position you are happy with.

i just searched for that joint on realoem (under a 1989 M20 525i http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=32&fg=30 ) and it came up with this list of other cars it's fitted to:

easy enough to find then, E32 and E34 are the prime targets then

Dan, will this allow me to fit an E46 rack to my M50 with M52 manifolds, or will I need to source an E36 or Z3 rack?

E46 rack should fit fine, I didnt need to adjust my standard linkage when I changed from E36 to E46 rack, just had to trim the plastic bit down a touch

so e34 ends of the ujs go on the linkage and e30 ends go on the rack and colloum ?
