The missus's Renault Clio has been making an rumbling noise everytime you turn the wheel to the right at any sort of speed, the faster your going the louder and more sensitive it is, literally just the slightest pressure on the wheel makes it do it...

I assume its a wheel bearing but wanted to check with someone who knows more about cars then me... I'm not that clued up with fixing then, just breaking them. :mad:

That a simple fix? And how dangerous is it whilst not being fixed? Shes been driving like it for ages now but I was out in the car yesterday and its terrible :? Shes of work this week so would like to get it sorted for her before she has to use the car again for work...

She'll be getting a E30 soon but still need this thing working too. :(

If it was anything like my old turd with a CV failure, it'll get worse and worse.. I sold it before it failed though. So can't help on that one. I wouldn't say it was massively ideal to be driving it. Round town and not many miles might be ok though.

It'll be harder than a bearing.

I would not be driving that, the joint could seize and the brakes being covered in grease is not ideal.
Being a Renault there will be 15 different types of driveshaft and yours will be the type that nobody has AND the job will turn into an epic languagefest ! This is why I do not work on French scrap ! :D

I'm trying to find a replacement for it, but dont want to fork out a fortune as the car wont be on the road much longer, a couple of months and she'll have an E30.

Shes being driving it like this for months... 8O What would cause such wear??

The cause of the failure is the split outer boot causing the grease to leak out meaning insufficient lubrication to the constant velocity joint causing premature wear and the joint to become noisey.

Split CV boots are an MOT failure.

In extreme cases the joint can fail all together and the shaft pop out causing loss of drive.

You will need some gearbox oil as well as when you remove the drive shaft it will leak out.

They are not to sad a job to do, undo the two bottom ball joint nuts, undo the hub nut, pop the ball joint off the wishbone, swing the leg back while pushing the shaft through the hub then pull the shaft out of the box.

There was no mention of it on the last MOT but that was last April so guess its just worn out.

Hopefully I can pick one up this week and get it done before she goes back work. Been driving it like it for far too long :cry: Cant wait til she stops using the damn thing... :roll:

Do you need to pop the driveshaft out the box. Can you not just replace the CV joint off the end of the shaft?

I do these on Micras and it's an hours job. Did one on a little 1.0 vibe I have on the market at the mo. 1 hour 10 mins from opening the garage door to dropping it off the stands.

undo the driveshaft nut with the car still on the deck before jacking it up and removing the wheel.
Break bottom balljoint and possibly the track rod end joint as well
remove the centre driveshaft nut and you should be able to pull the hub off the splines and let the driveshaft drop.
Then remove boot and slide it out the way.
Then with a very sharp blow (while holding the shaft in the box), clout the cv joint and it should come off the splined shaft.
Replacement is the reverse of the above.

Can't see a Clio being much different from many other front drive turds unless it's held on with an internal circlip but most are an interferance C clip that you push past?.

Not sure what year it is but heres a couple which suggest you don't need a complete shaft?:

Well I thought that, replace whats broke but from what I have read its cheaper to just buy the whole thing? Personally, I'd rather just replace what was broke...

Ending as im typing, but it states Manual... So I assume they are different.

Her Clio is the Mk 2 which ran from 99-01... So limited to them years I think, although I bet other years would fit, I just dont fancy chancing it

Those 2 you link Trev, one is for the first shape Clio which I bet is completely different then the other is from 2004 onwards, not sure?

The one I linked looks spot on, wouldnt have thought the outer cv joint would be different on autos and manuals?

Theres a few on there but looks like yours has the teeth for an ABS sensor?

See this one? it metions the teeth on the ABS ring and runs from 98 - 05 for a 1400. Also mentions Model:CLIO Mk II (BB0-1-2_, CB0-1-2_). Mean anything? but no mention of manual or auto which says to me they may be the same?

I dont see why they would be different for manuals and autos... I might ring Renault tomorrow and see if they know owt about it...

And unfortunately this turd wont be fragged or scrapped... As much as I want to just weigh it in and see the back of it... :cry: Has sentimental value to the missus... To me it cost lots of money...

If it was any other car i would say pop the CV joint off the end of the shaft but as its a Renault, replace the shaft.

If the car is getting weighed soon, get one from the scrap yard for a tenner!

Wont be Weighed in Barry :cry: Just being taken off the road and parked up.

Steve, all the models that one fits is Manuals :(

When it states Manual, it must mean Autos are different, but that ad does say "Will fit ABS and Non ABS" on the various engine sizes so that rules out if the abs models are different... Just need an auto one of them...

I'll happily put a second hand one on it, like I said, its only for a few months. She wants to get an E30 so will be searching for one of them soon as we have the cash spare. :cool:
