MR2 Mk2 Turbo - great car:

1. Great handling, high reving
2. Fast
3. Good looking
4. Easy to work on
5. Good owners network

Obviously I am biast with Scooby's , but with the "classic" 4 doors costing as little as £1500 , you find plenty in the hands of dodgy modders. I like to think that people who think all Scooby's are council , at least aprecieat the rare ones like my P1 and the 22B are styled and designed for a purpose and not purely for looks.

When people put on big wings and massive exhausts on , when the car doesn't even have the power to pull the skin off some custard , that's proper peado council action.

I'll counter that with my experience...
turbo shit itself, alternator shit itself twice, various things fell off
interior quality was shit
Wasnt fast, you struggle to drift them, it only looked good with nell mcandrew in,
woeful to work on in all respects
sold it at a £400 loss 3 weeks later.. utter pos.

Jap cars? no, leave them for scrap I'd rather be floating about in a e32
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

Wasnt fast? Compared to what?

I have owned rev1/2 and 3's and they are GREAT cars to drive and are very fast.
Jap interiors are usually shit.
Toyota's are very reliable cars, you must have been sold a lemon mate, unfortunately.
It depends on how you look at it I spose, engine bays are tight granted.

I'm not a fanboi never have been, I just appreciate good cars, you cant dismiss a car just because of its image or owners.

Imprezzas, Evos, Skylines, Rx7, GT4s, Mr2s are fantastic cars with massive tuning potential and offer some of the best 4 pots ever made.

This "council" word is aload of bollox if you ask me. Yeah there are nobs who drive scoobys, just like theres nobs who drive BMW's, its pompous stereotyping.

Im not a fan of big wings, wraps, shiny crap either so can understand people who like european brands not to like the look of them.

Nearly all the cars I've owned have been jap cars, I currently own an EVO3. Yes they are tinny and the interiors are not as good as some of the European cars. Pound for fun you cant beat them. They're cheap to run performance wise will take out most euro cars. I think what we got to appreciate is the japs yield a lot more out of a car than the euros. Before anyone starts going on about them rusting etc. let's just look at the mercs.

Also all this talk about council this and that, those people you are referring to have some the finest performance vehicles produced. I don't agree with sticking on a whole load wings and skirts etc. but these cars do what they were designed to do. They're cheap to buy perform well what more do you want. Also if you ever stop next to a BMW at the lights and they got bit arrogants about them, that's the last you'll have to see them because let's face it you'll leave them. Maybe there are a few here who have been out performed by one of council chariots. I am not slating the euros but I think we should just take step back and appreciate what the japs have done.

Out of 37 cars in 20 years I've only had 2 jap. Suzuki swift GTi when I was 18 and FQ300 Evo last year. Loved the swift and hated the Evo to death!!! It was a god awful car, granted it was so fast it could make the world turn the other way but it was shoite!!!

I love really old japs, I do remember my dad showing me pictures of his RX3/4 (can't remember which) that he had just before I was born. Same price as the 1300GT Capri it replaced but ten times the car.

I love the old celicas, exactly the same as the pictures posted - I'm sure I read somewhere they were to try to get in on the mustang market in the states?? Also love the old Skylines, is the yellow estate one?

I'd be really upset if I saw anything as classy as and old jap wearing stretched tyres and having 'stance' - f**king hate that work! Only pr**ks use it!!

The old school skylines do have a certain charm about them.

This is the 22B, this particular one has been kept in storage for 10 years and was take out for the first time yesterday.

Again obvious bias at play here , but this is one of Gordon Murry's creations along with the P1 for Prodrive.

Datsun 240z?
Early Celica's?
Early Supras?

All 8) and thats just a start

It's ridiculous making the statement "all jap cars are shit". They have made some seriously good cars. Okay so they lack inspiration in the most and are not "drivers cars"... :?

Lexus 400's back in 1990 were a serious luxury barge that worried the f*ck out of BMW and Merc. The latter should have been worried too with the total shite they stated to turn out in the later part of the 90's!!

The K11 Micra IS STILL the best cheap small hatch in the cheapy cheap "1st car" bracket (although I will admit finding one with sills is becoming harder :( )

I've had a few jap cars, 2 x Celica GTI, 2x Mazda MX5, 5 K11 micras over 10 years for various family members, Supra 3.0 non turbo to name the most and every one had more positives over the european equivilants than negatives.

Why do I drive an e39 sport? If I'm honest? The badge! It's f*cking snobbery I know but it's certainly not owned for the build quality thats for sure!!!!

And whats that e39 gonna be changed for? Possibly a Lexus as I neither have the time or energy any more to keep plugging in diagnostics to find out what the next f*cking bill is! I need a car I can rely on totally. THATS where jap cars win hands down.

No Nissan is not a japanese company????? What about Honda? Fords Spanish now are they as they are built in Spain? I think you are missing the point. The K11 Micra from the 90's and early 00's is a Japanese car.......

Which is what I wrote  It's a japanese car. We've spent umpteen pages writing about Sylines which are Nissans. Every sticker on a K11 has Jap writing all over it. Not much French though!

The only bits the French got involved in were the timing chain, the throttle body ,the sill drainage design and the glove box locks, I;E the only bits that go wrong ! :(

Renault own a very large stake in Nissan as a whole. The Sunderland factory was opened in the mid eighties to build the FWD Bluebird, then the second gen Micra and now the Juke which has been a runaway success (they can't build enough apparently). Nissan is an interesting company inas much that it has abandoned the Primera/Almera market to build oddball 4x4 types and the Micra. They do very well out of it.

I had to laugh at the latest Renault advert for the Megane. A bloke with a disturbing grin picks up a hot bird at a party, takes her home but when offered it on a plate, won't f**k her. Well, he did blow 20 large on a white Megane so he's clearly not right upstairs.

Only ever owned one jap car, easy to tune being a turbo, expensive to run fuel wise, and the fastest car i've owned/driven

It was utterly reliable, sailed through MOT's, but felt fairly detached to drive, E30 has far more character.

There are quite a few Japanese specialists about so no problem sourcing parts, plus as Trev said, they don't tend to break down as often :)

Trust me Imy, 13 years working on cars for a living is enough to know that the aftermarket is no where near as well catered for as european manufacturers and that jap main dealer parts are generally ££££.

Obviously there are reasonably priced items but overall, parts cost more.

Oh and a front wishbone and shock for an E46 for example can be had for £85 and a headlamp £50 inc vat. :)

And thats for a prestige manufacturer. Something run of the mill like a focus (same class as a civic) is even cheaper!

Of all the Japanese makes, Toyota are easily the most reliable. My folks bought a new Yaris when they emigrated in 2005 and it didn't blow a bulb in 5 years/40'000 miles. The new Tiguan on the other hand required a new instrument cluster after 4 months - sure, the warranty covered it but that's not the issue.
In the far East and the US/Canada, the majority of cars are Japanese (mainly Toyotas) for a good reason. Not the ultimate driving machine, but they start in the morning.
