I've done it and it works but there isnt much clearance. When I first did it the UJ was touchng the manifold but you can jig it about with spacers to get it free. Cant remember exactly what I did.

there's no need to make a custom uj for an M42, lol.
Front holes, E28 M5 engine mounts... job done

Sweet I've already got the m5 engine mounts and a z3 rack sitting at home so should be easy haha. Do I just use the e30 u-joint I can't remember? I'm sure it will all make sense once I get it apart. Want it done in a day though as is my only car.

And the original E36 pipes just needed a tweek on the end going to the rack and the low pressure side needed cutting and joining with a small piece of pipe/fasteners.
Clearance to the exhaust manifold was tight but it works on the original mounts etc in the forward rack mount holes.
For a good job I would use the linkage and m5 mounts (I like the feel without the rubber steering damper).

E36 rack on my 318iS - Previous owner had it done, but my god it makes a difference from other E30s i had driven. Sadly can't comment on how easy it is to do..

I had one on mine mounted on the manual rack holes, standard UJ, standard mounts and never had any clearance problems.
For spacers I've always used head bolt washers.
