I have two engines.

Engine 1:
M50B25 single vanos, quite an early engine as it has the red label ecu. I have never heard it run, but it was bought by an aquaintence who knows his onions for a conversion that never happened, and I trust that it is a very good engine.

Engine 2:
m52B28TU from a 51 plate 728i it runs fine but has "black death" oil syndrome, I did post up some pics of the nastyness within the head. It has 147000 miles up it.

M50B28 I'm thinking, I have the lighter crank from a non TU as well. I'm 99% this will all go together but, what managment? M50 with a B28 chip in the ECU, plus the M50 manifold looks favorite to me. Which injectors? Does M50 single vanos head work with B28 pistons and crank?

Just wondering if any one has done this, its wouldn't take alot of messing around before just buying a good M52B28 looks a better option would it :?

The advantage to it all is I have all this in stock. Theres a good few gaskets to buy too, but at least then you know you are good for the forseeable future.

Opinions. Dan? :D

You cant just put a chip from a 2.8 in the 2.5 ECU as they are totally different management systems, the M50B25 vanos management wont run a 2.8 stroker either, it just over fuels it to death. The most straight forward way to do it that will give you the best running engine is to use an M52 loom/sensors/ECU
And, like you say by the time you have bought rings/gaskets/bolts/extras your into money that could buy a complete 328 lump with loom/ECU

If you have to build an engine though, use the single vanos engine with the M52B28tu crank, pistons and rods. You can bump the compression while your on, 12:1+ is easily achieved
M52 management will run it perfectly so find a loom/ECU, if you sent it to me for converting and EWS delete etc it would still be cheaper than getting the M50 management to work properly

Go 3.0L if you are building IMO don't mess about.

You can buy a useable M52b28 for £300 so why bother "building" another 2.8?
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Nice one thanks Dan. As I thought more hastle than its worth for this particular project, it will just be the M50B25 for now.

Do you have any experience using the e38 sump, the pickup has the same part number as the e34 offering, but the sump is different but apparently fits.

@Duke, yes it was more about using a few bits I have lying around. Plus there is always a bit of a risk buying a second hand lump.

The difference is the dipstick hole, you have to use an M52 dipstick

I wouldnt even go to the trouble of fitting an M50B25 TBH, the 2.8 is so much better

how difficult is it to build a 3.0 dan? what figures would you see? managment? could you raise the compression?

Thanks Dan, yes I know the above is true. It would make a carbed 316 hustle along a bit quicker though :D
