Which ECUs are you trying - they should have a part number on, e.g. 0 261 200 405.

If the car has the EWS system then you need to also make sure that the new ECU also has the corresponding EWS box and the key.

Don't the later vanos M50's have EWS too, or was it just the M52?

Silver label M50 ECU = EWS.
They are directly interchangeable.
