fitting oil temp and pressure gauge to m30b35 lump
Moderator: martauto
Hi, two things and i hope somebody can help, i want to fit aftermarket gauges to my e30 using this engine and i may well be a bit dim but i cant find a take off to enable me to fit a mechanical oil pressure or temp gauge. as its a track car i wanted to fit these and prefer the old fashioned mechanical ones to the electrical. Whilst trying to find one i took of the what i presume to be a pressure relieve thingy.. A plug with a spring behind it and a cylindrical tube on the end of that, will i have buggered anything up by doing that as i put it straight back and did it up as soon as poss.
So firstly have i buggered anything and secondly are there any take of points or do i have to go electronic with the gauges, thanks in advance regards Tony

The part you have removed sounds like the chain tensioner to me? Was it at the front of the engine? Hopefully the chain wont have slipped when you removed it otherwise the timing could have changed!
I used a t piece to take a feed from the oil pressure switch at the back of the head (on the right hand side when looking from the front of the car) for oil pressure. Temperature I took from the oil filter housing, but that has been swapped to one from an e28 so I can have an oil cooler.

I'm the other side of the country to my car at the moment but one of the first images to come up on google shows the pressure sender:

And another shows a pressure sensor attached:

Can't find a picture of the oil filter housing I'm afraid.

You can see the sensor in this pic, at the back of the head just above number 6 inlet port.

Edit, beat me to it.

Is this the e28 oil filter housing you used winx? Been looking on Realoem, and that one is from an e28 535i

There are oil cooler adapters here, guess they could be tapped to fit a temp sensor?

Cool, thanks chaps. Oil pressure out of the rear of the head, done. what is the stock oil pressure on these, hot and cold on tickover and about 3k when hot. Now need to get the oil filter housing. I want to run a mechanical oil temp gauge so does this housing have a take off for the sender or does it fit in one of the holes in it. God i wish i knew more about these. That what comes from being a ford man i guess
Anyways thanks again for the help, regards Tony

Do you have a link to the "raid" web site? I'm not familiar with them.
