M30 conversion wiring problems
Moderator: martauto
Right, I'm tantilisingly close to the M30 being alive in my Touring, but there are some electrical issues.
I've a couple of very good friends helping me because I understand none of this, but does anyone on here have some pictures of their wiring in a converted car? In particular, the starter motor, the battery/relays please.
Or, is there anyone in the Redhill, Croydon, Godstone, Reading, Bracknell, wherever! that wouldn't mind us taking a look at how your car is wired up.
My engine came to a friend as needing a head gasket, which he did, but we've not seen it running so are not sure what problems we may of inherited. We can get it to turn over, but there is no fuel pump or spark, my alarm guy reckons the immobiliser isn't the problem (but we're not sure), and taking a look at another car would be a massive help. This has absolutely not been plug and play like I was expecting and I'm about to tear what little hair I've got left, out.

The wiring issue sounds like either what Simon said or immobiliser.
The three wires you change round for this conversion is for the blower motor, elec windows and the starter motor.
If all those are working, it defo sounds like one of the 2 above.

If you Got "Haters",Then your doing something Right!
CR24v??? Where's it all gone?? LOL
Simon, yes I do have the 13 button OBC in the roof.
I've read the sticky guid at the top until I can say it in my sleep, but none of these issues are mentioned. We've made the wiring adjustments mentioned, but to be fair they do say they shouldn't affect the running of the engine. The blower is working, windows are working, so I think all is good in the hood with those.
Ziggy, thanks for your kind offer. I'll see how the sparky gets on taking the alarm out, if no luck I'll be in touch mate!

In the roof??? You sure thats not the check control, OBC should be in the centre console, it's my bet that Si is refering to the immobiliser code function on the OBC.ShineOn wrote:Simon, yes I do have the 13 button OBC in the roof.

Le Mans Classic 2006Sorry, my mistake, I was thinking of the check panel. Tired and arsey last night! No OBC fitted to this car at all.
What is the DME relay, and how can I find/identify it? Is this part of the M30 loom, or the E30 side?
Appreciating your help by the way!

Near where the positive loops go on to the live terminal of the battery, there should be 2 relay's, one orange (fuel) and the other light blue (dme)
I trust you have a thick wire going from the + on the batt to the starter, And that you have earthed the engine to the chassis !!..

Earth from block to chassis and live to starter are done, yes, with new wire and shiny connectors. But I don't recall a light blue relay. There was a White one with some thick gauge wire running from it into the loom, and an orange relay with regular thin gauge wire.

Some are white insted of blue, Same same. This is the dme relay, If this is faulty you will crank but not start.
First check the power at the starter motor. This can include putting a live probe direct onto the cranking terminal to see if it spins over.
Right then. Remove the steering cowling and expose the coulm and wires. The thickish black/yellow wire is your cranking wire. Trace it back to the connector box and check that's all plugged in and not loose, If you see it(black/yellow) has been cut anywhere, and start's trailing off with other wires connected to it, then this an after market imobilizer/alarm. Cut them out and re-join the Black yellow. You also need to check that this wire is going live when you turn the key to the last position.

Ok, that makes sense, thank you. I believe the White one is working and can be heard clicking. I spoke to the alarm guy who fitted it and he mentioned a black and yellow wire is what he would have tapped into, so that's first thing to check when we get back to the car.
We rigged up a sprung starter/ ignition switch that operates the starter, so we know that works fine (starter is brand new) and the engine turns over cleanly.
