Just wondering if the AFM can be removed for better airflow. Thanks Chris

In reality it can be removed for a MAF or MAP or even Alpha-n on the original motronic.
I´m working on a few solutions.

Just wondering if you could run a similar setup to an s14 with a carbon manifold, for a similar sound out of an m20?

So do you have to run throttle bodies then?

Miller MAF is a very simple and effective option. It is a direct replacement for the AFM, is designed for an E30 and wires into the existing loom. I run one on my E30 and it works a treat.

You are only replacing the air flow sensor, not modifying any of the intake system, whether it be the phlemum, throttle body/bodies, etc... In theory, if you have a AFM, you can replace it with a suitable MAF.
Just be aware, the benefits of replacing the AFM with a MAF, or deleting the AFM with a MAP or stand-alone like Alpha N are not great on a standard car unless your AFM is cactus.

fully variable auto TPS + std idle/wot and a remap of the stock motronic AFM voltage tables should be all thats required.
some tweaking of the accel enrich possibly, or MAF/MAP
all are possible but quite time consuming.

you can convert to use either a certain part numbered volvo MAF or hyundai MAF with motronic. there was a guy that set both up on his 325i in the states and made suitable maps tuned with a wideband. the volvo MAF requires 2 points on a 173 ecu to be bridged with a peice of wire but can support up to something like 300bhp whereas the hyundai unit will only support up to around 230bhp if memmory serves.
i have both maps saved on my laptop along with the map editing software but i havent found either MAF sensor yet and ive sort of put the MAF conversion onto the back burner as of late because i firstly need one of the MAF's and secondly need a chip burner, chips and wideband to monitor everything.
