After being in the doldrums for many years now and bugger all left of the relatively small number made, surely the last of the Hand built masterpieces is set to rise?

I'm surprised they haven't gone up in price already.

The problem with M5 E34's is the same as Porsche 928's. Everyone knows the insane prices of parts and the cost of fixing them. Not just that, but the E39 version is a lot faster, newer etc. In short, only the low miles/never rusted stuff will be worth anything.
Cylinder heads are a service item on the 3.6, quite normal mate.

It's not just E39s, E60s can be had for the 20k asking price of the second one up there.Andyboy wrote:The problem with M5 E34's is the same as Porsche 928's. the parts prices are no worse really than any other M car, the EDC shocks can now be rebuilt by a company in poland

They bottomed out a few years ago. The £1600 3.6 with a ticket and a list of ailments is a distant memory. Biggest issue holding these back now is the well documented costs of getting and keeping them up to scratch and the fact that to the untrained eye they look like a 518 . Four door saloons , no matter how worthy are not loved by the masses. You have to really want an E34 M5.
The fact that many are leggy pigs beyond cost effective repair and plenty are still getting fragged is helping the values of the nice low mileage cars to increase which drags up the price of the rest.

Like E30 M3's or many classics, there are newer versions that are faster, better at what they do but they are not the same.

But you'd been to be very, very brave to want one of those. Whilst an E34 M5 engine can be rebuilt with £100 worth of Halfords tools, you can forget working on an E60 M5 yourself.HairyScreech wrote:

What about the rotten pipework, wankered ECU control unit, shagged top mounts, the £1300 AFM. Check out the cost on an E34 M5 exhaust system but make sure you're sat down first.Simon13 wrote:the parts prices are no worse really than any other M car, the EDC shocks can now be rebuilt by a company in poland
They're a great old bus but you need seriously deep pockets as well as skillz.
They don't frighten me because there is always a way around problems. Tired EDC belongs in an orange metal container with 'GRUNDON" written on the side.

they were about in tiny numbers really something like 343 3.8's and 700 odd 3.6s in rhd? I bet only a third are left being realistic?
I'll just enjoy mine, if it goes up a little in value then great

Yep, and out of that how many are actually any good? I doubt they'll ever be mega money but who in 2002 ever thought a Sport Evo would the there $$$ they are now? How many miles has the Anusblau done Simon?Simon13 wrote:they were about in tiny numbers really something like 343 3.8's and 700 odd 3.6s in rhd? I bet only a third are left being realistic?

136k Mr. E
Not many good ones i'd guess - they're all in long term ownership. They're at that old car stage where they're pretty good or pretty sh!t. The middle ground stuff isn't about

this has come to market again, i remember about 3 years ago it came up cheap on ebay for about £3000 after a lengthy lay off the road and not Tax/test
Some trader type snapped it up and have been trying to sell it for £10,000 plus the past few years.
His logic is now its £14,000

For that price, you would think he would put original headlamps on it and number plates...Simon13 wrote:http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/ ... 95/2838241

Does anyone think that these will be worth much more than a nice e39 m5 when the numbers dwindle? I'm talking about a fair few years from now.

Far less 3.6's than that Si, the UK cars are a pretty even split despite the 3.6 only being sold for 2 years of the 5 year production run - 283 3.6's and 304 3.8's sold by BMW UK.Simon13 wrote:they were about in tiny numbers really something like 343 3.8's and 700 odd 3.6s in rhd? 741 RHD cars sold in total worldwide by BMW.

Smarts are great. The trick is to serve them before the pin falls out of the grenade that is the engine

Fair points there then really, however, you could make it a little more interesting and remove the above mentioned grenade and fit a Hayabusa lump such as the one on Youtube

It's all down to economics. Boge and Bosch would need a minimum order that will exceed the number of these things left on the road. Can you imagine the cost of making the shocks?
