Why bother when you could have this beast instead?

No, not at all, BUT it is a much better engine for a 635

The factory put the V12 in to build the 850 development mule. There's been a few of them done.
M52 is pointless. Best conversion for a b34 is b35.

Nah, what you want is the 2-litre Ford Pinto lump, as some Irish bogshoite fitted in an E36.
Preferably with a very worn camshaft, so that it clatters in an agricultural way.

Actually, that probably wouldn't be so bad in a 635CSi, as they are extremely torquey in 2-litre form.

Now you're talking, though I would personally prefer to use the Austin Princess 2.2 straight-six.

Aah, the redoubtable E6. She'd benefit from some headwork but surprisingly, not a bad engine. The Rover unit was okay (the 2600 was very pokey) but the oil drain back valve scuppered many - it used to block, starving the head Nd cam of oil. Standard Leyland dealer practice was to unscrew the valve and give it a distance test* before fitting a replacement head with the valve omitted. Worked fine and increased the oil supply to the cam.
*see how far it can be thrown.

Let's not forget the AMC Pacer engine; a vast 3.8/4.2-litre boat anchor that could only muster about 100 bhp and return 17 mpg average. Party on - NOT!
And then, there's the Ford Zephyr/Zodiac lump - I saw a VW Beetle with one hanging out the back of it once; the handling must have been lethal!
Still, both worthy candidates for dropping into an E24...

Here's a very, very nice S54 installation into an E28 that might give you food for thought..
