i quite like them, they both look like they've kind of evolved to be like that, rather than the fake spray a bit of primer here and there over decent pannels and attack the body with some sand paper engineered 'rat' look.
cheers,
harry

The first one is perfect, I believe the guy is now doing an e12 m535i, the second one is trying too hard. You have to get it just right with rat look.

Pardon? It's scrap because the panels are mismatched colours? I guarentee this car has had more work and effort put into it than most of the E30s on this forum. It's recently featured on the front cover of Practical Performance Car, and as been photo'd in many other mags. The car has had pretty much a ground up rebuild and it's 2L M10 had been converted to EFI with a pretty trick setup. The picture taken above is from the most recent RAF Marham track day, since this is what the owner intends to do with the car and looks are the least of his concern. The colours have been derived from replacement panels and rust protection. Just because a car hasn't had a respray it doesn't mean they don't care for the car. Yes, he is also now in the middle of rebuilding an E12 M535i.

+1. maybe i'm getting old but (and i know this is the point) it just looks completely sh1t, nothing to have any pride in whatsoever.

Exactly -Rat look is an anti-aesthetic aesthetic. People not getting it is the point as is the creation of an aesthetic that counters prevailing values. Like most anti-aesthetic aesthetics it is more difficult than it looks (not like it being difficult is the point either).
I don't have a rat look car but I can really appreciate the judgement and creativity going into the 2002 with the arches. I like how it makes a virtue of the scrap yard origins and the home-made nature of the cars rather than hiding them away. Rat look cars like that really work.

What I find most amusing on this thread is the emphasis that the 2002's rat look is deliberate, he did all the repairs himself and didn't bother painting it. I think there's more pride in restoring a car from the ground up than a cheque book respray

. My mate in question lives down the road and has a workshop on my farm, and trust me he has the ability to paint the car himself, he just has other priorities for the car

Loving the rat look!!!!!!!!
Also starting to realise that any nice cars just get ruined more easily - scratches, car park dings, vandelism.
Any ***** that do that kind of thing would prob just stroll straight past a 'ratty' motor without even a second glance!!
Tempted to get something a bit ratty myself when i've sold the three cars in my sig!!!

Yeah it's an oil cooler, the position is a nod to how some modded japanese cars mount theirs.

I agree with miniblob, everytime I get another carpark dent ect..I think what an easy unstressed life I could have with a rat look car, just concentrating on the mechanical parts and leaving the body alone.
