Hi got in car today turned the key and it just kept happily turning round in the barrell without engaging anything. After some fidling with the key it engaged and started. Got home tuned key and nothing and the engine kept running. I also took the key out of the ignition with the engine running. Killed engine by removing fuel pump fuse and have disconected the battery as the ignition was still on.
Do i need to fit a new barrell or is there some other way to fix this?
Any ideas how much one would be?
Oh yeah its p reg 328i sport. Cant use car so i need to sort it soon as.
Cheers

i spoke to someone who was in ECP buying a igniton barrel for an E36; he said it was quite common; but unfortunately did say he had to damage the cowling around the steering wheel and break it out!
but im no expert of E36s; but that was he said!

If you can disengage the steering lock there is no need to damage anything, before trying to remove the barrel I would take the switch of the back and check it out first

Also as your car will have EWS you need to keep the key chip

I got it nearly all out today just a little bit at the bottom left in which should just pull out but id had enough of it.
Didnt cause much damage had to chisel the shear bolts out.
Apparently it is a common fault the new barrel coded to the present key is about 50 quid from the dealer.
There supposed to come out the same as e30 ones with a pin. But this didnt work as the hole thing was just spining.
