When asked "What's your best bodge?", he happily boasts, "....pumping sloppy body filler into a mini steering rack through the grease nipples, welding an 8x4 sheet of steel from sill to sill on a mk2 cortina, recutting tyres and then painting them black to hide the exposed cords, fitting a mini windscreen to a maxi and then filling the gap with lino, connecting the abs light to the fuel gauge, making headlights out of tin foil, filling a diff with banana skins, filling a renault 12 engine with melted grease and leaving it running to go through an auction, roller painting a car then shining it with parafin, pot riveting sills on then covering with body filler....christ, you name it, I've probably done it, and whats more, would probably do it again "

Great idea, to cut the whole back end off the floorpan and botch-weld it back up a bit higher.

I know the chassis is a bmw but in my opinion 'not the best at all', the guy needs suspending from a tree by his nut sack for ruining what a skilled person could have made a nice escort.

A 2 door e30 with 8 cylinders, what could be better

Well if the quality and strength of his welding is up to par, what's the problem?
After all ,every VW based beach buggy is based on a 'cut 'n shut' Beetle floorpan.
There's a big difference between glooping the back end of a car on to a right off with pigeon shit welds and an innovative custom jobbie like this, good luck to him I say

If it was a non sunroof compact I would have been upset
Is this a home made compressor tank?

On the Practical Classics forum. The thread is about your best ever bodge or something similar. You get the usual, " I once cable tied the fan shroud on temporarily and forgot about it for nearly three weeks! OMG!" and, " I once used one of my girlfriend's stockings as a fanbelt on my Morris 1000. I had some quick thinking to do when my wife noticed 'cos she only wears tights. LOL" and then you get this guy's manic rampage through the MoT manual. Hilarious. Mini screen in a Maxi?!

A m42 would rip this apart! I cannot understand why anyone would attempt this, cheaper to buy rusty old scort rather than build your own!leeparkes wrote:A V12 would rip this car apart.Speedtouch wrote:And he intends to fit a V12

have you seen what even completely rotten mk1 escorts are worth these days? a lot more than a decent running totally rust free compact anyway!mrLEE30 wrote:A m42 would rip this apart! i like the idea, old school looks with modern dynamics comfort and running gear, but don't like the execution of this particular one!
cheers,

i just like all the big talk. gonna fit a v12,just rip out the 1.8 and fit a 5.2 from a 750.goes straight in like all bm,s that have a straight six in them. dont know what gearbox, maybe a v8 one. wish it was that easy. his mot tester must be very brave too.wonder what the insurance would say as well

Seriously worrying, he's obviously punching high above his weight judging by the fact that he doesnt seem to be able to make templates and uses as many peices of rusty steel sheet to patch the escort body to the e36 floorpan. Problem is that anything can be made to look good with tubs of P40 and seam sealer in the right places

The back end being reattached seems abit erm iffy but the welds look fine as there seamed and not spotted. If the floor pan of the original shell was fine he couldve stuck with it ohwell seen worse.
Remember the kaddet c on honda s2000 chassis? looked alot better than this ted in the shed.

So long as it's strong enough to withstand the immense forces that are going to be put on it, then all to the well and good. However, looking at the standard of fabrication work, it doesn't inspire confidence.
That said, even BMW with all their professional high-tech design can get it horribly wrong, for instance, the rear subframe mounts cracking on E46s (huge splits appearing in the floorpan), and the rear damper top mounts on E30s cracking off

Indeed, nice Calypso 530i's with mushroom leather will probably be worth a fortune in ten years time!
And why go to the effort of dropping in an M30B30 when, for the same effort, you can have the meatier M30B35?
