Quick question. E36 318iS 4 door ever made ?
Moderator: martauto

Yep as already stated imported from South Africa late in the E36's life around late 1997-98. They came out just as I'd bought my 2 door 318's. Believe there were only between 500-1000 and came with different wheels and other colours than usual, for some I recall having a denim blue coloured one as a courtesy car.

Spookily I saw another E36 badged as a 318iS this morning and it was the same colour.StuBeeDoo wrote:Mick (Baur320)'s lass Barbara has a 4-door 318iS E36.

The UK ones are Avus blue (Sport models), Morea green (standard) and a dark metallic red.
Not all were SA built, you can tell by the VIN plate and the amount of rust. A BMW dealer brought SA cars in in the 90's and was sacked off for doing it. They're a nice car.

Stuart's right.StuBeeDoo wrote:Mick (Baur320)'s lass Barbara has a 4-door 318iS E36.
She's had it for ages, but nearly got rid of it last year because of rot but as it was in bolt on panels and nothing structural we changed all the doors and front wings and had it resprayed. Couldn't believe how bad it became so quickly and the difference between it and a same year M3 we've got. Apart from that can't knock it as it's really nice to drive and fairly nippy.

Had mine almost 7 years. Fantastic car. No rust on it. They made 1155 of them, most in SA but some came from Germany. They were a special only on offer in the UK between Feb 1998 and June 1998 although a few have been exported to other countries There were only 1050 still registered in the UK about 3 years ago. They have the 1.9 M44 16 valve twin OHC engine, 140 bhp in std form. Lots of M goodies and came in about 12 colours which included some M colours.

If I remember right it was Cheyne BMW that got the bullet for bringing the standard cars in - most of them were Morea green. I think it was a cancelled order that they bought cheaply and shipped over....but they might have been Malaysian CKD built cars. It was 10-11 years ago so I can't recall the exact details.
Virtually all of the official iS cars were SA built - they were launched in March 1998 by which time the E46 was in full production. The Coupes were still being built in Germany but there was no facility for E36 saloons so they were built in South Africa.

So the black one i looked at would of been an SA import. I can't remember if it had climate,A/C i think it did. Was 100% gloss black with the same 16 inch rims as Steele's car
