Its the little things that finish it off. I dont reckon many of the 'pro' fitters would bother going to that level.

Unreal worksmanship. I need to see this car some day, heard so many good things about it.

You must be the most patient man in the world doing all those fiddly bits, i'm usually f'ing and blinding within a few minutes!

It's a small power socket so I can hook up my battery charger without having to remove the CD changer etc. The little thing next to it is a fuse holder.

The socket is from the load area of an X5 8)

Cheers,

ian

couple of questions that i mused long and hard about before, during and after my boot build:

1 - how many hours have you put in? - honestly now.

2 - how will you get to the gain (and other) controls on the amps once fitted?

3 - how much has your rear ride height dropped?

i answer the above as:
1 - about 110-115 (including gas strut conversion)
2 - i mounted the amps 'arse end out' and went for alpine v12s as they have cables at one end and 'controls' at the other. not the prettiest solution but most practical.
3 - about 45mm - perfect!

and finally a tip (probably too late for you now but maybe useful for others) - a genuine used boot carpet from a scrappy makes a perfect trim match for any build covering, and cheap too! once the rear bits are stripped away all the fold lines disappear when cutting and sticking - handy.

Hi Paul,

1 - I honestly don't know, but an awful lot of hours. I've been working on it for a month or two now.

2 - I can get at all the amplifier controls once the lid is removed. Once I have scoped the system to get the gains correct, I don't need to get at them anyway. All the setup is done via a laptop connected to the DSP via RS232.

3 - I've not got the subs in yet, so not sure of the final drop. I have a coilover kit to go on which will allow me to dial in the height I want as well.

Good tip on the carpet. As you say, it's a bit late now, but maybe next time 8)

What does your setup consist of ?

Cheers,

Ian.

that is a top job there mate well done. pro fitters wont do evry thing as neat as that , the little things they will leave out because they are iether bussy or cant be arsed to do it. iv just had a system put in from a company called music world in sheffield he charged me a fortune . is this the first time you have done this .

Fraid not :D

It's not a proper coilover kit on the back, just smaller diameter springs and adjustable platforms. You need a lot of reinforcement and a cage to have proper coilovers in the back of an E30

ian

setup is:
nakamichi cd400 head unit, 4 alpine mrv-t707 amps, jl audio vr 6 1/2 components front and rear in custom builds, jl 10v3v2 subs, dynamatted everywhere, aerial hidden in n/s a pillar.

i cut away my rear shelf, re-inforced in steel to give strength back then bolted my sub box up to the underside to fire them through unimpeded into the cabin. i removed the boot lid 'torsion bars' and fitted gas struts to the boot lid hinges. the topside shelf trim was also cut away and then re-covered with acoustic carpet so nothing shows from the cabin at all. the components sit either side of the subs in 18mm mdf glassfibred and bolted to the shelf.

the front components are housed in door builds as close to on-axis as i could get without them interfering with driving. i dynamatted both inner and outer door skin and ported the rear of the builds into the doors with a glassfibre weather cowl to give the mids as much breathing air as possible. this took me around 80 hours.

the only bit i didn't do myself was trim the door builds.

no word of a lie i've never heard an install as clear as mine in any car ever. i'm sure they exist - i'm not claiming to be the best at this or anything silly it's just that mine turned out really well - as i'm sure yours will. it's all about prior preparation and planning after all.

no plans to go santa pod - i don't even know what's due to happen there. i'll get a meet this year though and you're more than welcome to try out any recording of your chioce. the nakamichi is fussy about disks however - any copies have to be on audio grade cd for it to read them.

I love yours Ian cause it has so much love put in it and looks really pro, so once again well done

Ho my mate will kill me he he finds out i've posted pics of his unfinished project here so keep it quiet or you'll be getting a vist from me winkeye :D

Agreed..Ian Top Stuff!!

Nice to see someone takin pride..

We had a company here yesterday fitting an install into the max Power magazine 350Z that we are trimming for the show..

1 He couldnt believe we were sewing everything..he said we should just go over the top and plain!! - He obviously doesnt know our style!

2 He was very sloppy and scuffed our leather on the install and didnt bother telling us and just fcuked off..

3 He left loads of mess and didnt clear up after himself..

I wont name the company but we shuld of done it ourselves but max wanted them as they are another sponsor..sloppy work tho very sloppy..

Next time we're stuck Ian i'll be ringing you..lol

After finishing in the boot, I turned my attention to mounting the DSP and DAB units.

First I had to make a secure mounting plate. It doesn't look like much in the photo, but there's nearly three days work gone into getting that sorted:

Then the DAB unit went in....

....followed by the Sony DSP unit:

I've started with the wiring, but no pictures just yet.

Hi Dan,

No, it's quite close to the quarter panel, but not bonded to it. There's so much waxoyl on the panel that nothing would ever stick to it 8)

Ian, what does the "kick" mean in the Profi Vanadium Kick speakers.
I am looking to upgrade my front speakers and so far the Rainbows looks pretty sweet.
Even the 230cm drivers have a freq. response of 48hz-25,000Hz â┚¬Ã¢â‚¬a the lowest I've seen from a driver that small.

It basically means they have been tuned to give a higher output in the 'kick' bass frequencies. They only really work if you are using a subwoofer though. You need to high pass them at 80Hz (not really designed to operate below this frequency), and use the sub woofer for 80Hz downwards.

Have a read of the first two documents on this page:

http://car.rainbow-audio.de/support/dow ... an=2&kat=3

Cheers,

Ian.
