My mothers 1984 320i (A'reg) had Motronic and yes it could be chipped.
Unsure what chips are available, but I know Unichip would work. You would get great gains from it I'm certain as cars from that era never had great maps in them from the factory. Newer cars now are more difficult to extract much noticable extra power from - unless its turbo/supercharged

The Unichip is piggy back, not a chip change of the ECU. It intercepts the signals between engine and ECU.
It should be able to be done with this, but whats been mentioned above MAYBE more economical for your application?

No problem that I can see in using the original distributor just to distribute the HT to the appropriate plug. The lower part of the distributor won't be used at all.
