As per thread title really, we have finally started work on the 1.8T M40 beast.

So far the manifold runners are cut up and ready for final assy, only thing holding us back is the flanges are yet to be cut , hopefully ready by tomorrow as I'm keen to get this one up and running, as is the owner

We're using a T3, originally from a Volvo 760 turbo ( 2.3 4 cyl ) on the Swede chariot it was good for 8 psi, so given the smaller capacity we should see a safe and cool 10 psi from this once all setup, more to come ontop depending on how high the intake temps get.

Management is MS ( again I hear you say  )

This insatll wil be arunning a small IC up front eventually but space is as always at a premoium so I've yet to conjur the final soloution, given lowish boost 6.5 psi it will be more efficient than with an IC, so perhaps that will be something to grow into

No pix as yet, if the flanges are ready tomorrow I can get welding again and hopefully have the Turbo and downpipe assy completed.

watch this space....

Cool project!!!

After owning 2.3 volvo wrongness I had already started thinking that surely parts could be used for a 4 cylinder car.. I even put a spare m40 head under the volvo bonnet to see how the manifold would line up!

How much bhp is a T3 turbo good for on a low comp say 325 engine :? It seems to be the main choice of conversions i've seen and i was just wondering why people dont go the Swedish way and stick a massive Lorry turbo on their cars winkeye

Interested in this one as i have a spare M40 lump sat in the garage.

What CR is a stock M40?

I reckon 200 bhp is just about doable on a budget from this lump.

Should be able to run a bar of boost on that with no det then. :)

Do you know the bore and stroke?

I wonder if there is enough meat on the piston crowns for me to stick them in the lathe and dish them a little??

Do you want me to do two sets Ant??

Cheers,

Doug.

Rowdyburns

Ticco dished out his pistons look on www.ticco.com ,1 of them got hole in but he was running running crazy boost and about 500hp and that is to much for the stock cam and might not of been tuned right aswell. So if you just dish them out abit less and tune it right should be good for upto 500hp. He has picture of piston cut in half and he did it to much it was really thin where it went through.

Here is piston dimensions for the 9.7:1 and 8.8:1

http://jjmacg.fu8.com/will/untitled.bmp

and I think stroke is 75mm but check out http://dave.maisenhelder.com/bmw/engines_&_chassie.htm

there is a database of all bmw engines on there with most of the info you need on there only one I didnt find was combustion chamber volume which I think is 40cc if you need to calculate compression.[/list]

yellow injectors are in
rocker cover changed and new spray bar installed
still got squirt to wire up.

Ant has done amazing things with the manifold
still gotta mout the t3 flange but we are getting there
