would a dodgy afm cause the idle to hunt really badly or could it be a split hose?

I would be looking for air leaks first, carb or brake cleaner is good for this as it eveporates quickly and burns well, so when it finds the leak and gets sucked in it makes the revs rise a little so you can go back and pinpoint it.

also check the Lambda probe, disconect it and see if the hunting stops.
