It's a beast!

I calculated that if the engine could be de-restricted and rev to 9000 (not sure if it will but it is a two stroke ? ), with the racer bicycle gears on it it would do 74mph!

It's only reached about 10mph so far, the plastic wheels don't help, it just drifts and spins! And throws the chain off - which is under development!

It has potential! winkeye

Mines getting there slowly, just need to have the exhaust modified a little so it will fit, then I can drive it - and evaluate the headgasket which I suspect to be a bit moody 8O Other than that, just needs front brakes and a few little niggles sorting - then it can come out to play

What makes you suspect the head gasket is moody ?

Apart from that, doesn't sound like too much to do though. ?

I get a film of mayo under the oil filler cap, spots of mayo on the dipstick and a steamy exhaust. That said, I think I need to take the car for a good drive before jumping to any conclusions, it has onlybeen running on axle stands so far! I bought some K-seal today so will see if that helps, the radiator leaks anyway - so maybe it can fix two problems.

With regards to the drifthog-

You need to change the chain/sprockets for motorbike or something petrol driven. The teeth are man enough to cope with the power and rpm.

rfegards to the car:

Bloody heck. I want mine painted now! Sweet!

Theo: Like you say, mayo can collect when the engine isn't driven with properly, I get it on my expansion cap doing lots of short runs but no other symptoms.

OZE30: Drifthog is in early stages of development! And it was made purely from stuff people had thrown away. It needs some rear axle bearings, different gearing and rubber tyres may help too!

And thanks! It was a whole load of work to prepare and paint the car, but worth the time and effort I think!

I just hope it doesn't get 'keyed-up' by some pikey chav ****er!

That's reassuring to hear, I hope to be driving the car on wednesday once i have the correct m12 bolts for the propshaft coupling, so i'll report back with findings then. Sorry to go off topic on your thread!

Hehe, I have a similar problem with my £200 E34 535i. Took it for an MOT last week and a rusted jubilee clip exiting the water pump gave way just as the tester was driving into the testing bay 8O Quickly legged it home (1.5 miles), running rough as sh*te (I think water got into the dizzy) and there was mayo on the dipstick
I'm hoping I haven't kippered the poor thing...(seems to start and run OK now that the clip has been replaced).

I also purchased a bottle of K-Seal just in case! Taking it for another MOT tomorrow, ho-hum...

Thanks Andy! :D

More trouble though! :(

Driving home from work, all is fine until I turn into my road. Had a bit of a shock, no power steering!

Had a look and -

Image

Pas belt is gone, completely missing.
And the fan belt has turned inside out! :?

Even though it's full of fluid there is no resistance at all on the pas pump pulley, it spins very freely, not sure this should be the case so I assume my groaning, screeching pump has finally given up!

Aah well, spare fan belt on now, and some Weetabix for me before driving to work in the morning! :?

hey martin, they do spin freely with little resistasnce without the belt, they only resist when there is load on the steering rack, if that makes sence!Alex

That does make sense Alex.
I wasn't sure, thanks for letting me know.

A bit of a mystery to me at the moment as the belt had only been on for 5 months and 4000 miles or so, and I regularly checked the tension when I was doing other stuff.

The pump was very noisy though. :?

hmmm, theres obviously somthing amiss!have a play with the pas pump pulley and check the bearings, they might be worn, but only showing it(and therefore throwing the belt) when the pump is hot.Alex

Thanks dude, but I think I'll just get another pump and try that, it's an easy job to change it.

I might put my Z3 rack on then too! winkeye

UPDATE!!!

Got fed up with rattly, oil spewing, hot-running engine so I've decided to do something about it.

I got this -

Image
Image

I'm going to bung this one in pretty much as it is.
Apart from it came from an auto - going by the throttle position sensor and the fact that despite it having a flywheel bolted to it, no spigot bearing! 8O

Then I'll strip my original engine (again! ) , try and find out what it's problem is, turbo it and bung it back in.

Well, that's the plan! :?

Thanks Toby!

Yeah they are cheap, I got that one with a manual gearbox for £150.
I know you can get whole cars for that money but I didn't want the extra time and work.

I'll be taking a lot of inspiration from you with the turbo conversion Toby, hope you don't mind! :o:

I'm not going for huge power and expense though. Going to try with mostly scrapyard and home made stuff to keep the cost down.

The most expensive bit will be the ecu.

that's a good price, manual box and fly are worth 100 easy - and you just try breaking one of these boxes! (i haven't managed yet lol)

hadn't driven mine for a month or so thanks to various issues with new wheels (for example 3 had 215/40 tyres and the fourth a 225/45; the bloke was driving around with it like that 8O )

anyway, got them sorted yesterday and went round the block, which turned into 40 miles and about £15 worth of entertainment. it's brilliant!

if I ever get down to Ant you can have a drive, that ought to convince you :D

and ECU wise - megasquirt all the way.

I was going to go the megasquirt route, I had a good chat with Ant about that when I picked up your old inlet manifold.

Would be great to see you and your car, hope I can make it when you are down here.

I'd love a drive, thanks!, but I don't need convincing!
I need more power - fact!

Apart from a spigot bearing - that I know of so far.
I'll probably swap over my new distributor cap and rotor arm, spark plugs and give it an oil and filter change, nothing major though.

Not sure when I'll get round to doing it yet, was going to do it this weekend but I've got a bad dose of tonsilitis so not feeling much like lifting 200kg lumps of iron around! :(

I'm keen to get my current engine torn down to investigate it though.

Yeah, it's driving me mad!
And it's still got the cracked timing cover which is a mare of a job to do with the engine in and sump on.
And the power steering pump packed up so I've been running with no belt.

I thought it'd be easier to take it out and do it again!

Are you going to change the sump gasket, for an hours work it will save you future grief for about £8 or so. Although if the engine you are rebuilding goes back in, it might not be worth it

This is commitment, respraying and new engine just for us Le mans lads :P You know all of our cars are turds right? :)

Very kind of you as usual Andy, but I should be able to get it done on my own, or there is usually an extra pair of willing hands not too far away from me.

I bought myself a hydraulic engine hoist last week as well so that should be easier than organising borrowing or hiring one.

I have thought about the sump gasket, be a good chance to take a peep at a few big end bearings, I might do as it will be a long time before the original engine is put back in.

Should be easy enough with two of you, i ended up working on my own the last time(dropped the engine out from under the car then hired a hoist to put it back in).

yeah but think about all those bolts to undo :teehee:

my engine came out of the 535 via a Stihl saw, into the peugeot boot then into the e30 without being touched - and 15k later is still in there

i think 'lucky' sums it up best :o:
