ideas with fitting charger (M30B35 build)
Moderator: martauto
no i would think that its easier to get better power figures through a turbo conversion but for more usable power i would go for a S/C conversion providing its done well.

More beer!STiBen wrote:only problem iv come across is trying to get the main nut off the end of the crank so i can change the timing chain and tensioner. i just cant keep the bugger from moving while i try the undo it. iv even tried adding beer to the pa-lava.
any ideas on this?
Seriously, I've had big trouble with these!
Twice now I've drilled and grinded into them and then split them with a hammer and chisel!
That was after I wedged the flywheel with my biggest pry bar and used a length of exhaust on top of my biggest breaker bar on the pulley nut, and I bent the pry bar like a bannana!
Not a nice job, and you need to take care to not damage the crankshaft, but a new nut and washer is only about £5 from BMW.
Nice work there though!
Sounds like a grinder and some carnage + beer once iv finished with the power tools. Safety first.
Need to pop down BMW anyway to grab a water pump gasket and sump gasket so could pick one up then. Any idea on the part number?
Cheers

last week we put a pry bar in the teeth of the flywheel and held it against the block. Tried with an air gun but wouldnt move! Switched the air gun over and sent the other way for a second then reversed and it came straight off!

I'll have a go with a mighty pry bar but I don't have a air gun
need to get my arse in the 20th century.
I took the sump off today to replace the gasket, is there anything I could check before I put the sump back on? Maybe if the bearings are scored or something.
Also I got told that I should get my pistons skimmed or replaced with low comp ones. Any ideas on this? I'll be hoping for About 1 bar boost from the charger.
Cheers for the part numbers driftboy I'll most probably need that.

Good luck with that...STiBen wrote:I'll have a go with a mighty pry bar but I don't have a air gunneed to get my arse in the 20th century. .
I'd love to have air tools too but no space at all for a compressor.
I would, partly out of curiosity.STiBen wrote:I took the sump off today to replace the gasket, is there anything I could check before I put the sump back on? Maybe if the bearings are scored or something. .
And it's best to know now if there's a problem rather than find out later!
If you do get the timing gear off you could also take the oil pump apart and inspect / measure that, it's not that difficult.
Piston skimming is a little risky if you take it too far, as it weakens the cast piston.STiBen wrote:Also I got told that I should get my pistons skimmed or replaced with low comp ones. Any ideas on this? I'll be hoping for About 1 bar boost from the charger. .
I have an M30 piston which I cut in half, so if you need to know thicknesses or anything just let me know.
It might be worth doing a search on t'internet to find out how much boost the standard / skimmed cast pistons can handle, forged ones would be nice and strong, but expensive I'd guess!
I might look into this myself, when I'm soberer!

Hmmmm the big £££ seem to come to light.
Maybe I should go for a set of forge pistions. Can I keep the same H rods or should I replace them too.
Is a decommpression plate just a thinner head gasket? I was advised against them probably because the bloke wants to charge me for the pistions as well the bugger.
Driftboy if you could measure the thickness in the centre of the piston that would be a great help. I got told they wasn't very thick.

In the centre of the crown, it's thinnest point, it is 7.6mm thick.

There's not really much I can take off before they get too weak then. Might have to be new pistons
there goes my budget project.
Need research on a set of pistons.

just wondering if there is anything else i can steal from the E36 318ti?
cheers

whats the ratio on it? come on off the top your head the pressure is on
was thinking of having a z3 rack but if theres not much in it between the two ill take the E36 one.

I must admit I don't know from memory the ratios.
I just did a search for ' z3 and rack and ratio ', it brought up loads of threads, could be worth a quick read.
I would but I'm just about to go to the pub!

nice project you've got
you might end up having to make a custom radiator though. on my conversion (10mm forwards of position 3) i had to cut the redundant aircon pulley section off the front pully asssembly, just to clear the (thinner E28 535i) radiator. There is absolutely no room for another pulley.
Alpina used a rad, squeezed into the front panel for a while
also, with your S/C on the manifold like that, you'll have to move the servo and M/C under the dash?

Cheers Gaz.
Iv just ordered my front and rear porche brakes so that will be next.
I'll hopefully be going to the position 3 so should have a incy bit more room. (I hope) I need to fit the charger pulley on the front so will next extra room anyway. Might be a pain but I'll try and get over it. Bit of A update later.

Iv done a search round and I'm going ahead and getting a set of low comp. Forge pistons made. Just wondering on what spec and measurements I should go for as if never changed or got a set made before. (abit of a new one for me)
I'm hoping for making about 1bar boost from the charger. I'm also going for a intercooler as well if that helps.
The head is going for port and polishing and a skim so don't want a larger headgasket.
Thanks
Ben

check "downing atlanta" system. They use a similar Eaton charger bolted to the manifold and keep the pressure at around 0.7bar providing MORE than enough power without having to deal with intercooling piping and lower compression, etc. I'd keep it as simple as possible and just make sure you use someone who knows how to remap it on a rolling road with Knock sensors fitted during the job.
Some good advice there. It would save me alot of money sticking with the standard compresion. Would it be wise though sticking with the intercooler ideas though? Keep charge temps down easier.

i see. well that kind of changes everything.
back to the drawing board then, a very simpler one.
just need to change the big end bearings and pop the sump back on..... job done.
pop it in.
if its ever that easy.

Only thing is, when you've got used to it with 7psi you WILL want more more more!
Then you'll need the intercooler!
Saab / Volvo intercoolers will fit behind the front panel with a few minor modifications and are dirt cheap from scrapyards, you can grab a load of hoses and pipes to plumb it in too, scrapheap challenge style!
My turbo uses a Volvo intercooler and boost pipes made from bits of Saab, Nissan and Ford, didn't cost much at all.

see now thats the truth right there. id feel like i could blow more than 7 psi after a month.
not good.
iv seen some real good I/Cs on ebay for cheap too.
i might go as far as putting a nice I/C on. scrap the idea of low comp pistons.
a 740i twin turbo conversion sounds real good right now.

ok abit of an update....
things have been abit slow as im trying to by a house at the same time. = banks are assholes.
anyway iv finally got my head back from being port and polished and its looking real good and tidy. iv also got over sized valves which have been ground in...
i now just needing a new cam and the heads complete.
im waiting on cotswold to sort my invoice out so i can buy all the gaskets, seals, bearings ect so i can finish the bottom end.
ps beefy you will get a pm about a set of mounts soonish

Well I'm having a everything new in the head, cam, uprated lifters, larger valves ect and i'm in the process of rebuilding the bottom end once Cotswold get back to me so I can order everything. Once the engine is rebuilt I can then start looking on how I can fit the supercharger.
The body is having alot of work done including 5 bolt hubs and Porsche brakes front and rear.
Still lots to do.
