E30 M3 V10
Moderator: martauto
I have brought an evo 2 spoiler off a zoner (thanks Jim ) and painted it myself. I have had a bit of a struggle getting the colour right and ran out of paint tinter and painting skills after 3 repaints, I am going to leave it on for now and get it professionally painted over the winter.
I have also rewrapped the under bonnet wiring and removed the redundant s14 wiring.
The M5 oil cooler was looking a bit vulnerable, I have fitted some mesh inside the vent. it looks like the are clips to fit something here, I cant see anything on realoem, does anybody know if there is a proper mesh for the lower vent ?

A few pics, excuse the thumb on the frontal shot, my photography skills match my painting skills

No mesh on the front bumper vent but there is meant to guide which fits the full width of the bottom vent.

I've just been out to the garage keith, and found the guide as barry has said. I removed it as it wouldn't fit with the e60 oil cooler. there's no mesh on it, it looks similar to a 325i oil cooler grill. I can pop it in the post to you this week if you like keith ?
Thanks for the offer Glenn, I have fitted the mesh now so I won't need it.glenn wrote:I've just been out to the garage keith, and found the guide as barry has said. I just wondered what should be there as there are fixings for something.

I have been doing a few bits and pieces to the car, first I ordered this from Americaland ;

It is an external temperature sensor for the 13 button obc I have fitted, it cost £20 delivered with a 10 year guarantee. I thought about where to fit it and eventually put it in the grill next to the headlight.
It seems to work fine, I initially thought it might read incorrectly with the air blasting past it.
I have brought a pair of inlet plenums as the ones on it were a bit singed but worked fine. (the original engine come out of a fire damaged car )

Note the temporary fuel filter by the brake fluid reservoirs which I fitted after the blocked injector problem. I believe the crap in the injector came from internal rust on the steel front to back fuel line. I have brought a new fuel line (£42 from BMW ) and plan to fit it over the winter.
The front badge was looking a bit worse for wear;

I rubbed the aluminium m and 3 down with wet or dry and metal polished them, I brought some vinyl strips in the m colours and cut them to size and lacquered them.
I noticed that the light grills have lots of blanks between the slats, presumably to keep the rain out. I set about it with a dremel as the air boxes are directly behind the headlights. I hope to reduce the intake air temperature by doing this.
You can just see the external temp sensor next to the headlight In between the bottom 2 slats.

I have machine polished the car ready for Santa Pod tomorrow, Just a few shots of it in the garage;

It took about a week to arrive from ordering, there was no additional fees from customs.

Thanks Keith
Sorry to jump thread but I am curious to know if a E46 air temperature sensor would fit a E30?, Obviously the wiring connector is different but is it possible?
Not sure about internal readings etc?

I am not sure but they have different part numbers, the e46 ones seem cheaper on ebay so it would not be expensive to find out. The e46 ones seem to be about a tenner, personally I would buy the one I did as it works first time and has a 10 year guarantee for £20bigbird76 wrote:Sorry to jump thread but I am curious to know if a E46 air temperature sensor would fit a E30?, Obviously the wiring connector is different but is it possible?

In the end I ordered the one from the USA, It arrived in the week and I Installed it yesterday and my 6 button OBC now has the correct temperature. Also while I was there I changed my obc to Celsius from Fahrenheit by switching the small screw fitting on the rear of the obc unit.
Cheers

I haven't done much to the car lately apart from changing the steering rack gaiters.
I have been collecting parts for when I strip out and refurb the rear beam over the winter, I plan on powdercoating / painting the rear beam and arms, powerflex bushes and black diamond hoses with new brake and fuel lines.
I have fitted a set of gauges from an Audi, I chose these because they have the same font as the e30, light up orange and have red needles like the M3.
When I got them the bezels were a bit scabby;
(photo aspect gone a bit egg shaped ! )

First I polished the plastic 'glass' with rubbing compound to remove scratches and then I stripped off the paint with a scuff pad (came off easy as the paint was thin) followed by satin black paint.

I picked the Audi loom apart, removed the relay and separated the lamp earths so I could connect them via the e30 dimmer system.
I chose to fit them in the stereo position as I haven't got a stereo because the car is too loud to hear one !
The fascia plate I used was an old genuine BMW one which I found in my garage, probably out of one of my old e30's from a few decades ago.

I discovered the gauge write up in the wiki after I had finished, one discrepancy I found was the vdo pressure gauge sender, it quotes the American part number (360-007 ) not the u.k. one which is; 360-081-030-006c. the spec for the v10 is m12 x 1.5 thread 0-5 bar, 10 to 180 ohms, two post sender with warning contact.
The temperature sender was correct in the wiki, I brought a Meyle one for £6 part no. MEY1008100004
My car used a positive to feed the low oil pressure warning light, because I used sender with a built in negative switch for low oil pressure I had to convert my dash oil warning light to suit.
As my vent gauge already reads engine oil temp I plan to install a sender in the rear diff. I have the M3 tachometer oil temp gauge connected to my gearbox, this normally runs at about 50 degrees c.
As the oil temp gauge does not start till 60 degrees c I may fit a sensor which over reads so I can establish a 'normal' but false reading for the diff temp.

been reading this from the start, really impressed with the car,
also, thanks for the part number for the oil temp sensor, been trying to find one that don't cost the earth

if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

For cross reference purposes the genuine Audi part number for the oil temp sensor is;steve_k wrote:been reading this from the start, really impressed with the car,

AUDI 049 919 563 B (049919563B)
I think it is about £20 from an Audi dealer.
The one I brought;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191313234782? ... EBIDX%3AIT
I tested the Meyle one by connecting it to the gauge and dropping the sensor end in boiling water, it read exactly 100 degrees c
VDO's agent in the u.k. are based in Birmingham, they have a technical helpline on 0121 326 1271.

I was going to try this one as it has a proper 2 pin connector and is 0-170 which is what the gauge shows http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180847879900? ... EBIDX%3AIT
