I'm not a new guy to the 3 series game having built a magazine featured E36

Image

And being the current owner of my E36 325 Drift toy

Image

However, after having to temporarily surrender my licence for a year and therefore being unable to drift, my grandad decided that I needed something to cheer me up and I was presented with a whole new 3 series challenge. The keys to his beloved E30 'Chromie'! I had wanted to get my hands on this for so long and now it's mine to do with what I see fit. What a gift!!!

The car is a 1986 pre-facelift E30 316 4 door in platinum green.

The moment I got home I was straight on Ebay shopping for parts.

First up I ordered a set of these

Image

Image

(reps I know) :rolleyes 16x8 and 16x9 staggered set up with 195/45/16 Achilles ATR’s and 25mm hubcentric spacers.

Image

And a pair of fresh badges.

Trial fitted the wheels on the car :D :D :D

Image

Image

Image

Got the tyres mounted up onto the wheels and I love how they sit :)

195/45/16 on 8's and 9's

Image

Image

Image

Image

Got over to the car and threw the wheels on for some Tractor stancing. High is the new low don't you know?! :P

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Removed the towbar too whilst I was on.

Image

To combat the tractor stance I used a combination of E30, E36 and Vauxhall Corsa parts to make the Chromie low

Got some second hand -40mm Weitec's along with a load of other bits for £21 on Ebay

Image

Chucked them on to decide how much to 'modify' them by ;)

Image

1.5 coils were removed cleanly, ensuring that the spring comfortably seats in the cups/mounts

Image

Got some Corsa B -60mm springs for £10 and mated them to some E36 ride height adjuster cups that I have from my drifter

Image

Chucked them all together and ended up with this :)

Image

Nice and flush

Image

Image

Chucked a little classic AA badge on the grill too just to add to the old man spec of My Grandad's old car :P

Image

And that's how it currently sits.

I plan to run it for a year and then take it off the road for airbag suspension, full respray and a wire tuck/smoothed bay.

The tech-2 spoiler was already fitted when my Grandad had the car and he loves it so It's staying until at least the respray. Although I would prefer a tech-1

his car can do what he likes, but anyone posts anything on a forum its open to comments good or bad, you yourself said as soon as you saw the wheel..

nothing wrong with these wheels/tyres, but lets be honest here- along with the tech 2 spoiler, it just looks naff on a 4 door chromie in that color, compared to that of a 2 door facelift car say

I agree completely and would defend to the death your right to do so.

I expected a bit of hate tbh as I know it's not to everybody's taste. I'd prefer some genuine splits of some description but it's what funds allow at the moment and a wheel change is on the cards for the future. This is a car that I will never be selling as it was my Grandad's pride and joy, so it'll get seen through completely and to a high standard over time.

it was your granddads pride and joy, a lovely looking chromie- youve slammed it to the groung with chopped lowering springs, streched tyres etc and talking re spray and air suspension

my advice- would be, leave it all standard and look after it, or keep those original parts- and look around for another shell to chop about and build a project, 4 door chromies are not really the cars for that sort of schizzle

It needs a respray as the paint isn't fantastic in a few area's and a couple of panels need replacing/repairing. I'm keeping everything so that I can put it back to standard at any time, the air suspension is about practicality and wheels/tyres are completely down to personal taste. I personally like wide, low offset wheels but again they're just 4 bolts each to change so no huge issue.

My Grandad is all for it and has helped me with the build so far. He has just always said that he loves the spoiler so that's the reason it's staying (for now at least).

You keeping it the same colour?

I like subtle mods and have done a few on my car. Although when I one day get my dads cabby it will stay how he has it now 100% factory, how he loves it.

Any engine swaps planned?
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

I can handle abuse lol. No engine swaps are planned. I'm just sticking to the M10 but I do want to tidy it up in the engine bay. I plan on painting/polishing the rocker cover and putting a nicer 'pancake' style filter on along with a bit of a wire tuck.

The car is pretty much as my Grandad gave it to me apart from lows and wheels. Some bits aren't to my taste either particularly but they are to his and I want to respect that :)

The classic looking Blaupunkt head unit looked so in place amongst the 80's dash but it lacked the features that I would have liked from a daily drivers audio system

Image

It would have been a shame to replace it with something modern so a decision was made to retain it as the radio and run a hidden CD/iPod player and the glovebox top provided the perfect panel to hide one away.
